What Are The Most Reliable Van Brands?
Selecting your perfect van with the right engine, the right specification and the right price is no easy feat, but one thing that you can’t know about your vehicle before you get your hands on it is how reliable the van will be.
For the most part, vans are built primarily to rock-solid. Most vans go through a tough working life being used to haul cargo, travel long distances and tackle the rigours of everyday dramas on the road, so they need to last.
Things can and do go wrong though, so while there will always be an element of ‘what if’ when you take delivery of a new van, it’s worth considering how well your manufacturer of choice ranks when it comes to reliability.
After all, more time spent off the road can be costly for your business.
For this ranking we are referring to the trusted Fleet News ‘FN50’ reliability survey – published in November 2026 - which finds out which manufacturers perform best when it comes to durability.

10. FIAT
FIAT returns to the overall top ten for reliable van brands in the UK after a period outside, which stands to reason given it shares mechanicals with Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall.
That said, it is notable that - as with previous years - the Italian firm, which offers the FIAT Doblo, FIAT Scudo and FIAT Ducato, still ranks behind its sister companies in this ranking despite creeping up the order at the expense of Maxus.

9. Citroen
One of three Stellantis brands inside the top ten, Citroen – like Peugeot and Vauxhall – should benefit going forward having recently overhauled its entire commercial line-up.
Ninth place for the French marque is a slight dip on where it finished in 2025, its most popular model - the Citroen Berlingo small van - also dropping out of the top ten for most reliable van model.

8. Vauxhall
A sizeable drop from fifth to eighth for Vauxhall, while the Vauxhall Vivaro - the fifth most reliable van in terms of models - has also slipped out of the top ten over the past 12 months.
A disappointment for the British-badged marque, it has some catching up to do to get on terms of Toyota and Peugeot given they sell mechanically identical vans

7. Nissan
Though it still trails Renault as its sister van brand, Nissan enjoyed a strong improvement year-on-year, thanks in part to the success of its smallest model, the Nissan Townstar.
The Renault Kangoo-based model - which is unique in being the only small van offered with the choice of either petrol or electric powertrains, rather than diesel - was rated the sixth most reliable commercial vehicle overall. That placed it behind only the Volkswagen Caddy in the small van rankings too.

6. Peugeot
Though it shares a boardroom with fellow PSA member Citroen, Peugeot ranks much better than its French cousin in terms of reliability overall, maintaining sixth place overall for brands year-on-year.
On the plus side, its most popular model - the Peugeot Partner - is listed inside the top ten for most reliable models in tenth place

5. Toyota
Toyota has only recently expanded its commercial range to include a three-strong Proace line-up of the Proace City, Proace (medium) and Proace Max.
One of the standout performers between 2025 and 2026 is Toyota, which leaps up two positions to occupy fifth place - ahead of the Stellantis brands with which it collaborates to develop its commercial vehicles.
Even better, the Toyota Proace sits comfortably inside the top ten in seventh position among the most reliable vans overall.
While none of its models feature inside the overall top ten, the Proace is close in 12th, while the smaller Proace City sits 15th overall.
Better still, Toyota – despite not making the models itself as part of its collaboration with Stellantis – has still extended its industry-leading 10-year warranty over to its van range. While it won’t make the vehicles any more reliable per se, it is peace of mind that stretches far beyond the industry-standard 3 or 5-year warranties.

4. Ford
As the best-selling van brand in the UK by a country mile, Ford’s performances in any reliability ranking should be taken seriously.
Encouragingly, there are some bright points in the range, not least the performance of the Ford Transit as the ninth most reliable van in terms of models.
Of more concern, however, is the sharp drop of the huge-selling Ford Transit Custom, which drops from third most reliable van in 2025 to a position outside the overall top ten. Moreover, its sister Volkswagen Transporter - which was developed by Ford - sits inside the top three by comparison.
This is therefore reflective of Ford having slipped from second to fourth as the most reliable van brand outright - work to do for 2027 as the Ford Transit City comes online as the fifth member of Ford's commercial vehicle range.

3. Mercedes-Benz
The top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz Sprinter maintains its reputation as one of the commercial vehicle industry’s hardiest workhorses, lifting from second to first as the most reliable van outright, replacing the previous generation Volkswagen Transporter in the process.
It helps maintain the German marque's overall standing as a commercial vehicle brand in third overall.

2. Renault
Having jumped rom sixth to fourth in 2025, Renault has risen a further two positions to earn status as the second most reliable van brand in a major win for the French company.
This was achieved largely on the strength of the venerable Renault Trafic, which was ranked as the second most reliable van outright, while the Renault Master also sits a strong eighth overall.

1. Volkswagen
Ranking third, fourth and fifth with the Transporter, Crafter and Caddy respectively, Volkswagen earned Fleet News’ accolade as the most reliable van manufacturer.
After replacing the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as the most reliable van on the road twelve months ago, the VW Transporter might have ceded that position to its German counterpart when measured against the seventh generation medium van, but Volkswagen's overall consistency allows it to hold onto its coveted position for 2026.
