Best Pick-Up Trucks for Farmers in 2026

Best Pick-Up Trucks for Farmers in 2026

The appeal of pick-up trucks has diversified significantly over the years, but their native origins as hardy workhorses for heavy duty industries like farming remains as evident today as it was decades ago.

Which is why the latest crop of pick-up trucks are primarily still designed with the toughest professions in mind, ensuring they can haul hefty payloads and lug maximum towing capacities to get the job done without breaking a sweat.

This is especially true for farmers, who not only rely upon pick-up trucks to carry bulky equipment or tow heavy trailers, but often need to do so across muddy fields and tricky terrains that would ordinarily humble other vehicles.

With this in mind then, which are the best pick-up trucks for farmers on sale, right now?

What Makes a Good Pick-Up Truck for a Farmer?

Generous Payload

Farm workers are likely to haul all manner of cargo, equipment and machinery, sometimes at the same time, so it is important for a pick-up truck to offer a generous amount of payload to handle whatever lands on the flat bed. For the most part, pick-up trucks designed for heavy-duty work will offer over-1000kg of payload, though some – like the KGM Musso – can exceed 1200kg.

Strong Towing Capabilities

If a pick-up truck can’t handle a payload within its flat bed, then there is a good chance it will be hooked up to a trailer to pull it along instead. This is the preferred choice for particularly heavy equipment and is why pick-up trucks are design to haul to maximum legal towing weight of 3,500kg.

Excellent Off-Road Handling

What sets pick-up trucks apart from their counterparts for farmers is their abilities in the rough stuff. From crossing boggy fields and muddy patches, to pulling heavy weights on loose surfaces, to scaling difficult landscapes, there is no vehicle more capable of making light work of heavy terrain than pick-up trucks. This is made possible by pick-up trucks persevering with old-school ladder-frame chassis’, which offer superior off-road ability.

Durable

Pick-up trucks are often used for heavy duty work, which means they need to be capable of withstanding heavy-duty use. From bumps and scrapes in the line of work, to hard revving through the torque curve, to hauling heavy payloads, pick-up trucks are not only worked the hardest, but they are expected to be the most durable too.

KGM Musso Rhino+

While the KGM Musso (now known as the KGM Musso Saracen, see below) isn’t the newest pick-up truck on the market, it has gained a loyal following among the farming community for its superior payload and towing capacity.

So, it will come as a relief to many that KGM has maintained those qualities while giving the model a major overhaul for its new generation Musso.

To be known as the KGM Musso Rhino, it will be sold alongside the Saracen for the time being, as well as the EV, which is targeted more at lifestyle consumers.

Like the Saracen, the Musso Rhino comes with a long wheelbase Rhino+ variant that allows for 1,262-litres of usable cargo space, while payload is rated at over 1,200kg. With a class-leading GVW of 6,900kg, the Rhino+ has the highest total load capacity of any pick-up truck on sale.

Beyond these credentials, the Musso Rhino+ has multiple four-wheel drive modes to tackle any surface, trailer sway control, a plush new interior and a striking new masculine look.

KGM Musso Saracen+

As mentioned, the KGM Musso Saracen+ remains on sale for the time being, providing similarly impressive workhorse abilities with a great value price tag.

Indeed, the Saracen+ was already an excellent choice for farmers with its 1,205kg of payload and 3,500kg towing capacity.

It doesn’t have the more modern features and design of the Rhino+, but if that doesn’t factor highly with you, then the £7,000 (as of writing) saved on the list price compared to its stablemate might prove more tempting.

isuzu-d-max

Isuzu D-Max

The Isuzu D-Max is now the only pick-up truck in its class to offer a full range of body styles, including Single Cab, Extended Cab and Double Cab.

As such, in Single Cab configuration, the D-Max can also haul a 1205kg payload, while the Extended Cab manages a similarly sizeable 1155kg.

Opt for the Double Cab and the D-Max has the most generous payload in the sector – with exception to the Musso – of 1110kg.

It has also just received a substantial mid-cycle update, the most significant of which is the introduction of a new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, replacing the erstwhile 1.9-litre unit.

While power remains unchanged at 162bhp, the D-Max now returns 400Nm of maximum torque, to give it more strength in the rough stuff.

It has also received a light makeover with a redesigned front grille, while certain grades get grey LED headlight accent colours and updated fog lamp bezels.

Ford Ranger PHEV

Recent changes to the Ford Ranger pick-up truck line-up has seen the model slim its offerings to the choice between 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel and 2.3-litre plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain options.

However, all models in the line-up offer over 1,050kg of payload, up to a maximum of 1,098kg offered by the XLT-trim 3.0-litre V6 model.

Beyond that, however, the Ranger offers the largest flat bed in its class in standard Double Cab trim, while it offers an excellent blend of on-road refinement and genuine off-road ability to ensure you get the best of both worlds if you’re using it for both commercial and private use.

mitsubishi-l200

Mitsubishi L200

One of the more positive stories to come out of the automotive market this year has been the return by Mitsubishi to the UK market, and consequently the return of the Mitsubishi L200 to Vansdirect.

A model that can trace its lineage decades earlier, while the L200 would be the model to spearhead the shift of pick-up trucks for private lifestyle use, it was still as capable as any commercial workhorse model where it mattered, and as was consequently adored by farmers.

The latest generation L200 is now back to continue that tradition with the new model gaining a generous 1,092kg of payload from its large flat bed, while it will tow up to 3,500kg as well.

Significantly, being a Mitsubishi – famed for off-road models like the Shogun – the L200 will likely be unstoppable in the rough stuff with all manner of electric trickery to ensure it will power across rocky terrain without the merest hint of stress.
