2026 Renault Trafic: Everything You Need To Know

2026 Renault Trafic: Everything You Need To Know

If the UK has the Ford Transit Custom, then France most certainly has the Renault Trafic, a van that makes up a large portion of the estimated 6.5 million commercial vehicles pounding the road across the Channel.

Much like the Transit Custom, the Renault Trafic is something of an institution to the French, but its appeal isn’t just limited to those borders.

Indeed, the Trafic – a nameplate that has been in service since 1980 – has been at the forefront of the medium van sales charts for decades now. In fact, in the UK, only the Clio and Captur sells more units than the Trafic van

So, while the current model is on the cusp of a major overhaul for 2027 (see below), it still holds immense appeal as a hard-working, durable and trusted commercial vehicle.

Clearing the Way for the New Renault Trafic E-Tech

The Renault Trafic moniker might have been around since the 1980’s, but 2027 is set to represent arguably the most important year in its long history.

Indeed, it will be the year that the new generation Trafic hits the road and – this time – it has been developed around an all-new electric platform that has been maximised to deliver competitive range and fast recharging without compromising on payload.

While the current Trafic is available with an electric powertrain, the next generation Trafic’s dedicated platform allows for specific packaging that results in a shorter front overhang and a lower ground clearance that in turn provides generous load space.

If you or your business isn’t quite ready for the switch to electric, however, the current Renault Trafic is set to remain on sale with diesel power for the time being too.

2026 Renault Trafic: Dimensions, Loads & Weights

The Renault Trafic is available with the choice of two distinct lengths – known as L1 and L2 – while they also come with a six-seat crew van option.

Unlike most other medium vans, however, the Trafic is available with the choice of H1 and H2 heights, with the latter proving the perfect option for those who regularly transport vertical items, such as plants and bulky frames.

In Panel Van guise, the Trafic is one of the longest L1 vans on the market at just over five-metres (5080mm), while the L2 – which has an extended wheelbase - stretches to 5480mm

In standard L1/H1 guise, the Trafic offers 5.8-cubic metres of load space, which ranks among the best in the class, while this rises to 6.7-cubic metres for the longer L2/H1.

However, choosing Trafic with the extended H2 height ensures mammoth levels of load space, measuring 7.8-cubic metres in L1/H2 guise and 8.9-cubic metres in L2/H2 form. Just be sure to note that H2 models will be unable to squeeze under barriers for most multi-storey car parks.

Moreover, Renault offers a load-thru bulkhead that helps to extend the load bay for particularly long items like timber and poles. Not only that, the Trafic offers 88-litres of interior storage space too.

As well as competitive load space, the Trafic is also one of the more generous vans when it comes to payload capacity depending on the model you choose.

The Trafic’s best payload figures come from the 150bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel in L1/H1 with 1,222kg, while entry-level 130bhp and flagship 170bhp versions of the same engine come in under one-tonne.

In terms of towing, the Trafic enjoys braked capacity of 2500kg across the board among its turbodiesel models, while the electric E-Tech peaks at 920kg.

2026 Renault Trafic: Engine, Performance & Powertrains

Under the bonnet, the Renault Trafic offers three variations of its proven 2.0-litre dCi turbodiesel powerplant, generating either 130, 150 or 170PS.

It also comes with an electric powertrain, known as E-Tech, which features a 52kWh battery, but this is on the cusp of being replaced by an all-new generation in the coming months.

Crucially, the Trafic Blue dCi 130 is considered one of the most economical and cleanest engine choices in the medium class, returning over 40mpg on a combined cycle, while emissions figures are set at 176g/km.

The Renault Trafic E-Tech, meanwhile, will return up to 186-miles of electric range, but if you have your heart set on an electric van, it is worth waiting for the new generation Trafic E-Tech, which delivers up to 279-miles of range
