Volkswagen Caddy electric van revealed!

Volkswagen Caddy electric van revealed!

Volkswagen vans were busy at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show 2018 with five new models on show, one of which was an all-electric version of the Volkswagen Caddy!

Volkswagen e-Caddy

A surprise reveal at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show 2018 in Hannover, the electric small van will join the market mid way through 2019 with the capability of travelling 137 miles on a single charge. The Volkswagen e-Caddy is designed for businesses who require a van for short journeys and/ or multi drop deliveries in towns and cities. Featuring similar technology to the Volkswagen e-Crafter, the VW e-Caddy gets a front-mounted electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack placed under the load floor in the rear of the van. When it joins the market midway through July, the e-Caddy will be a direct rival for the Renault Kangoo Z.E.

Built with ABT Sportline

For the brains behind the e-Caddy, Volkswagen vans were helped by ABT Sportline who are the electric motor sport specialists behind Formula E team Audi Sport, the Volkswagen Caddy chassis is sent to ABT's plant in Germany to be converted. The e-Caddy may have sporty origins however it is designed for business use. At launch the Volkswagen Caddy electric van will be limited to the long wheelbase (L2) Maxi model of the panel van, providing 4.2 cubic metres of load volume, however payloads will be 100kg less than the standard panel van at 635kg. There will also be a kombi version and seven-seat Caddy life MPV joining the range in 2020, these will also be limited to the L2 Maxi bodystyle in order for the battery pack to be accommodated.

Performance of the new VW van

The 82kW electric motor which delivers 109ps will be limited to a top speed of approximately 70mph, whilst charging times take five hours when connected to a 7.2kw wallbox, or from zero to 80 percent in as little as 49 minutes when connected to a 40kw fast charger.

Volkswagen e-Transporter

Volkswagen vans also used the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show 2018 to showcase four other new vans, one of which was an electric version of the Volkswagen Transporter medium van badged e-Transporter. The VW Transporter electric will be launched in the home country of Volkswagen vans, Germany in 2019, with the all-electric VW Transporter T6 getting the option of a larger battery pack offering a maximum range of 250 miles. Like the VW e-Caddy, the VW Transporter electric will be based on the long wheelbase model, whilst the VW e-Transporter will get payloads ranging between 750kg and 1050kg and a gross vehicle with rating of 3200kg.

No plans to bring the Volkswagen e-Transporter to the UK

Volkswagen vans have revealed that there are no current plans to produce a right-hand-drive model of the Volkswagen e-Transporter, however the brand did admit that a 2020 launch 'might be possible' if there is a large demand in the UK market for such a model.
