The Citroen Relay - more than just a van
The Citroen Relay has been around since 1994, when the Relay name was first introduced to the public. For its entire life, the Citroen Relay has been produced alongside the Peugeot Boxer as both vans were based on a second-generation Fiat Ducato.
Today, not a lot has changed as all three vans remain essentially the same, albeit with different badges. The Citroen Relay was most recently updated in 2014, while its engines were upgraded with the advent of Euro 6 legislation in 2016.
Available with a range of 2.0-litre diesel engines, the Relay achieves Euro 6 compliance via the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology which requires AdBlue solution in order to function. There are three power outputs from which to choose; 110, 130 and 160ps.
Combining the mid-range 130ps engine with start & stop technology yields the best economy, with Citroen claiming a return of up to 48.7mpg. This engine offers as much in term of torque as the top-end 160ps model, and with a better fuel economy it's difficult to see why you would look past the 130ps option. All engines are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox - at present there is no option for automatic transmission.
What is the payload on a new Citroen Relay van?
Generous in terms of payload, the Citroen Relay van can carry up to 1600kg while retaining a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3.5-tonnes. It's the L2H1 model with 130ps that achieves this, but if space and/or volume is a concern then an L2 model may be too small. Moving up to an L3H2 model relinquishes just 75kg payload but there's a gain of almost 600mm loading length and a full three cubic metres of load volume.
Enterprise models include a lot of great features as standard. Included is air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter, 5 inch colour touchscreen with digital radio, Bluetooth, USB and steering wheel mounted controls, rear parking sensors and a perimetric alarm. The rear parking sensors are particularly useful on a van of this size.
In the cabin there's a large overhead shelf and a lockable glovebox among 13 different storage spaces. You'll also find two passenger seats and a pull-down work surface in the centre seat, so you can complete paperwork on the go.
What Citroen Relay conversions are available?
The Citroen Relay van is also available as one of a number of conversions including Tippers, Dropsides and Luton vans. The Tipper is designed to make light work of the toughest jobs, with high performance hydraulic power packs and a strong and durable build quality. It's even available as a double cab model so you can carry the whole team to work.
Dropsides are also available as crew cab versions, and have a strong reputation for high quality and durability. Citroen have built their conversions with end-use in mind, and as such every part of the dropside is pre-treated with extensive waterproofing and salt resistance. Even the load deck is coated and sits upon a full galvanised underframe.
When a panel van is just not enough or you need to maximise every last inch from your load space, a Luton van is the answer. Popular with removals companies and furniture stores for that very reason, Luton vans offer a conveniently uniform loadspace from which every last millimetre can be used efficiently.
