Launched over 20 years ago, the Citroen Berlingo has accumulated many awards from publications such as Vans A2Z, BusinessVans and Fleet News’s small van of the year award – for five consecutive years.
Walk down any street in Britain and you’ll be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t have a Berlingo parked along it. A lot of these vans are older models, which is testament to this great little van’s quality.
The Berlingo has had a number of facelifts and relaunches over the years yet its solid engineering, excellent standard spec and low running costs remain. Some things never change.
Now with a Euro 6 compliant engine, the Citroen Berlingo is more fuel efficient and emits less toxic gases. These are the only real differences from the Euro 5 model, along with the addition of an AdBlue tank which must be filled every so often to comply with regulations and for the van to actually run. When your AdBlue runs out, the engine doesn’t start.
It’s not difficult to see why the Berlingo is a Vansdirect best-seller, and has done so well for Citroen over the last two decades. The entry-level ‘X’ specification comes with Hill Start Assist, SmartNav touchscreen navigation and vehicle tracking should your Berlingo get stolen. Move up a level, to ‘LX’, and you’ll also get a sliding side load door, EXTENSO folding passenger bench seat and cruise control. The top-end ‘Enterprise’ specification is the definitive version of the Berlingo with digital radio, Bluetooth, USB and Aux ports, 7 inch colour touchscreen, air conditioning and rear parking sensors.
As one of a handful of small vans to offer three seats the Berlingo has another distinguishing feature. The bench seat isn’t the biggest but provides the extra seat that’s sometimes needed. As with the previous model, the Berlingo offers a usable loadspace of 3.3 cubic metres which is accessible via the 180 degree-opening rear doors. Passenger and load protection is provided with six load-lashing eyes.
Nothing else has changed – the Berlingo has excellent handling and a smooth gearbox and it remains a pleasant van to drive.
