Ford Transit Custom Euro 6 upgrade - what's new?

Ford Transit Custom Euro 6 upgrade - what's new?

One of Britain's best-selling vans, the Ford Transit Custom, has been upgraded with new and efficient Euro 6 engines.

The Ford Transit Custom's three engines have all been given the Euro 6 treatment. The result is three enhanced engines which Ford have categorised in an attempt to make it easier to decide between them.

Previously, the Ford Transit Custom's three engines had power outputs of 100PS, 125PS and 155PS. These units were impressive enough, with performance and economy to match any rival in the medium van segment. Now, they've been upgraded and are even better. More power, better economy, enhanced efficiency.

Ford Transit Custom engines

The three categories used by Ford are 'Efficient', 'Flexible' and 'Performance'. There's no guessing which is which - it's basically entry-level, mid-range and top-spec. Ford's descriptors of choice just sound more appealing!

All of Ford's new engines are Euro 6 compliant, which means that they emit 55 percent less Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) compared to the previous Euro 5 standard. The Transit Custom uses Selective Catalytic Reduction system to achieve Euro 6 compliance, a system which also requires the use of AdBlue solution. AdBlue is a urea/water based fluid which converts NOx emissions into Nitrogen and water. In addition, a particulate filter is used to reduce more than 99 percent of emitted solid particles from the exhaust.

So, let's take a look at the 'Efficient' model. Previously a 100PS unit, the Euro 6 upgrade gives Ford's entry-level engine a 5PS boost for a 105PS power rating. Engineered to meet strict Euro 6 standards, the Transit Custom's brand-new EcoBlue TDCi diesel engine delivers up to 360Nm of torque and combines outstanding fuel efficiency (as low as 46.3mpg on this variant) with excellent driveability and refinement. A state-of-the-art design helps to minimise running costs with compromising on payload of performance. CO2 emissions sit at just 157g/km.

Next up is the 'Flexible' power unit - the mid-range 130PS version. Having previously had a power output of 125PS, this engine also gets a boost of 5PS. This variant strikes a performance balance, delivering extra power and torque (385Nm) to increase Gross Train Mass (GTM) and braked trailer plate without compromising emissions - which are the same as the lesser unit.

Finally, there's the top-of-the-range 170PS engine. This one is slightly different in that its power has been boosted by 15PS - as opposed to just 5PS for the first two units. Extraordinarily, the 170PS unit delivers 405Nm of torque, which is huge for a mid-size van. As the most powerful engine in the range it's the ideal choice for shifting heavy loads or towing, with a fantastic combined fuel economy of 44.1mpg. The 170PS engine emits just 165g of CO2 per kilometre.

Ford Transit Custom dimensions

The rest of the Ford Transit Custom's features and dimensions are largely unchanged. Loadspace ranges from 6 to 8.3 cubic metres, while the load area can take 3 europallets and items up to 3.4metres in length. There's a load-through panel in the full-width bulkhead while the rear doors open to 180 degrees and are lockable at 90 degrees. Payloads range from 600kg to 1400kg depending on your model.

Available with 3 (Panel van), 6 (Double-cab-in-van) or 9 seats (Kombi), the Ford Transit Custom comes in Base, Trend, Limited and Sport trim levels.

As standard on all models you can expect steel wheels, headlights with courtesy delay, full-width load-through bulkhead, 2x 12 electrical sockets and Bluetooth connectivity. Trend models add a body-coloured front bumper, front fog lights, front & rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and cruise control to the base specification.

If that's still not enough, opting for a Limited model adds body-coloured mouldings, rear bumper and handles as well as alloy wheels, DAB Radio, heated front seats, air conditioning and a Thatcham category 1 alarm on top. If style matters, there's the sport model. Aside from a rear-view camera, the additions for Sport models (styling kit and bigger alloys) are purely aesthetic.
