Introduction
The new Transit van derivative is based on a front-wheel drive Ford Transit platform, with Ford vans boasting that the new model offers a versatile, low-height platform for a huge range of body conversions and will be suited to a number of applications, ranging from more general delivery and distribution to removals. The new Ford Transit skeletal model offers a chassis height which is 100mm lower than the standard front-wheel drive Transit chassis cab, which means the load floor of the new model is more easily accessible. The new model also comes with a lower step height meaning there is no requirement for a separate tail lift.
Weight reduction
The skeletal Transit van model gets a significant 200kg weight reduction in comparison to the equivalent chassis cab model. The design of the skeletal model also offers a substantial advantage in terms of payload, in conjunction with the prospective of improved fuel efficiency. The new van also features a cab design which is open-backed and hence supports easy walk-through from the cab area to the load area of the converted body.
Numerous models
Ford vans offer the new model with a choice of three different wheelbase lengths, suiting a variation of van body conversions, with the longest model coming with a wide-track rear axle and the two shorter models having the wide-track rear axle as optional. All versions of the Ford Transit skeletal chassis cab model will offer a gross vehicle mass of 3.5-tonnes and will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with either a 130ps or 170ps output. Each output will be hooked to a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with a six-speed automatic gearbox also an available option.
