Land Rover Discovery Commercial Review

Land Rover Discovery Commercial Review

If you're searching for a high performance 4X4 commercial vehicle, which doesn't look like your average pick-up, Land Rover may just have the answer.

The Land Rover Discovery Commercial has many of the features from the passenger SUV model, but has added some serious specification to help individuals meet those challenging business demands.

Exterior

Land Rover Discovery Commercial

From the outside, the Discovery Commercial doesn't look too different.

It has received a number of design updates such as premium LED daytime running lights and headlights, a refined front grille and new bumpers. If you look closely from the front, you'll spot the 3D camera and 360 Park Distance Control systems.

The wing mirrors at the side of the vehicle are no stranger to tech - featuring 3D cameras, LED indicators and the blind spot monitoring system.

The rear cabin can be opened up using the key fob, and the classic split tailgate feature has been retained from the passenger model.

Overall, the Discovery Commercial's bold, modern design means it looks at home in the city or off-road, and you'll certainly arrive on site looking the business.

Interior - load space

Discovery Commercial Load Space

Inside, the driver and passenger set up is the same as the original Discovery, however in the commercial model the second and third row of seats have been removed to make room for a decent loadspace of over 2 cubic metres. This compartment is accessible through side and rear doors, making it a convenient and versatile storage option. A standard Euro pallet will fit comfortably in the back with a payload of 784kg. Plus, loadspace is further enhanced with a 132-litre underfloor stowage compartment which can accommodate more fragile or valuable items. It's safe to say, space has been well optimised in this vehicle.

In the back of the Discovery Commercial, you'll find a number of convenient switches (allowing you to alter air suspension and deploy the tow bar for example), as well as a 12V socket - handy if you need to charge something on your way to your next appointment.

The floor of the cabin is protected with integrated non-slip, heavy-duty mats which are fully removable for easy cleaning. And you can secure your load from movement and damage over even the harshest terrain, with six fixed lashing points.

Interior - cabin

In the front, Land Rover have thought about it all. Storage hooks and nets help hold everything from workwear to all-important documents, and deep sided rubber mats protect the interior from muddy boots. The smart centre console has cup holders and extra storage underneath too.

As you'd expect with Land Rover, comfort and entertainment haven't been sacrificed at the hands of practicality. Far from it. The intuitive 12.3-inch driver display and 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system ensure connectivity, convenience and visibility at all times; with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, responsive 2D and 3D mapping and cruise control all as standard. Plus, if you fancy more gadgets and tech, there's a wide range of optional extras available to make your life even easier.

Engine and Performance

Land Rover Discovery Commercial

The Discovery Commercial now comes in a cleaner more efficient form than previous models - it's powered by a D300 AWD Mild Hybrid engine, which utilises a battery to harvest, store and redeploy energy which is normally lost during deceleration.

Before heading off-road, there are a number of controls which can be toggled through to set the vehicle up for the terrain ahead. Suspension height can be adjusted an extra 75mm above normal levels, Terrain Response allows for greater control on slippery surfaces (such as grass, gravel and snow), and Hill Descent Control uses intelligent breaking to help tackle downhill slopes safely.

When it comes to the hard graft, the Discovery Commercial will make light work of heavy loads, it has a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg. Optional tech and accessories such as Advanced Tow Assist and roof rack kits are also available to make these jobs even easier.

The Land Rover Discovery Commercial isn't a budget option - however you do get a lot of Land Rover for your money. Yes, there are other commercial 4X4s on the market, but the Discovery Commercial is particularly unique; with its all-terrain capabilities, intelligent technology, clever use of space and an impeccable design, it certainly has a lot going for it.
