Next Generation Mercedes Vito Teased By Super Lavish Concept
The next generation Mercedes-Benz Vito has been previewed following the unveiling of an uncompromisingly luxurious new concept car, the Mercedes-Benz Vision V.
Unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show, the Vision V is dubbed as a ‘Private Lounge’ on wheels and is endowed with an extraordinary array of features that blur the lines between car and a personal suite.
With a no-holds barred approach to lavishness and excess, the Mercedes Vision V boasts an immersive lounge with a retractable 65-inch cinema screen, surround-sound system with 42 speakers and seven projectors for an ‘immersive user experience’.
All very impressive, though these features bear little worth to those visiting this website expecting to see vans.
So why is the Vision V being featured here?
Well, if you stripped away all of the (many) shiny gadgets, gizmos and guff, you will see the bare bones of what will become the next generation Mercedes-Benz Vito.
Granted, you’d need to squint pretty hard at the moment but while the Vision V is all about what you can see on the surface in its concept form, beneath that overt luxury is Mercedes’ much vaunted new Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA).
A brand-new, state-of-the-art platform, VAN.EA has been developed to accommodate an electric powertrain as part of its original design process.
Described as ‘modular, flexible and scalable’, the platform – which can also house a conventional internal combustion engine – is intended to maximise the benefits of an EV, such as increased range, faster charging speeds and more efficient battery use.
Sources indicate Mercedes is aiming to exceed the 300-mile range mark with the new pure EV Vito, which is more than the current Ford E-Transit Custom (236 miles) and Vauxhall Vivaro Electric (205 miles).
It would also better the range of other native EV vans, such as the VW ID.Buzz Cargo (276 miles) and Kia PV5 (248 miles). The current Mercedes-Benz eVito is limited to 160 miles of range.
For the time being, however, Mercedes has given no details regarding the finer specifications of the VAN.EA platform – such as range and power – but it has previously confirmed the new Vito would be launched as an electric model first before being joined by a fuel-based version later.
Striking New Look For Mercedes Vito
As well as being the first outing for Mercedes’ new VAN.EA platform, the Vision V offers a glimpse of how the next generation Mercedes-Benz Vito will look.
While the Vision V concept will more closely resemble what is to be expected from the forthcoming V-Class – the passenger model based around the same architecture as the Vito – certain design traits will definitely apply to both.
Indeed, the two models currently share a similar basic silhouette, while the front-end has minor modifications to differentiate the more utilitarian Vito van from the more sophisticated V-Class.
Either way, both models are likely to get an adapted version of the Vision V’s curved snout, which is dominated by a large grille and flanked by stylised slender headlights, while the tapered D-pillar echoes Vito/V-Class models of the past.
At the rear, however, there will likely be some changes since the Vision V’s party piece is its wide one-way glass tailgate which allows rear-facing passengers either an uninterrupted view of the road behind or the glass can act as a screen for an auto-cinema experience.
Fancy just not ideal if you happen to carry a lot of tools around with you.
