Mercedes Vito - New van review

Mercedes Vito - New van review

From the Mercedes vans brand renowned for safety, reliability and quality, Vansdirect reviews the Mercedes Vito van!

Introduction to the Mercedes Vito

Perhaps not as well-known as the largest member of the Mercedes vans family, the Mercedes Sprinter, the Mercedes Vito takes its place in a hugely competitive medium vans segment. The Mercedes Vito competes alongside big hitters such as the Ford Transit Custom, Volkswagen Transporter and Vauxhall Vivaro vans.

The Mercedes Vito van has been around in various guises since 1995, with the most recent 'face-lift occurring in 2015. The Vito is renowned for its excellent quality, car-like refinement, quiet engines and outstanding levels of comfort. The Vito joins the Citan, Sprinter and upcoming X-Class pick-up van in a high quality Mercedes vans range.

Engines and economy of the Mercedes Vito

Mercedes vans believe that the last generation Vito van suffered from its rear-wheel drive only configuration and lack of variety in the Vito range, this is now not the case: Mercedes vans now offer the Vito with front-wheel drive and three body lengths.

A four-cylinder Euro 6 compliant 1.6-litre diesel van from Renault powers front-wheel drive models, with a choice of 88ps and 114ps engine outputs. For heavier or longer distance work, you may be better suited by rear-wheel drive models: The Vito is available with a choice of 2.1-litre Euro 6 compliant diesel options, with 136ps, 163ps and 190ps outputs.

The Mercedes Vito is also impressively economical, with the most efficient 163ps engine equipped with a BlueEfficiency package delivering up to 49.6 miles to the gallon. With all models across the range comfortably delivering in excess of 40 miles to the gallon.

Loadspace of the Mercedes Vito

The Mercedes Vito is available in three body lengths: Compact, Long and Extra Long and a single uniform height of 1.91 metres. The height means that all three versions of the Vito can fit in a standard multi-storey car park. However there are feelings that the lack of a high roof derivative means the Mercedes Vito compromises slightly for load volume.

Maximum load lengths range from 2586mm in compact models to 3061mm in extra-long models, while load volumes range from 5.8 to 6.9 cubic metres. The Vito is strong in terms of load carrying, with payloads ranging from 1,289kg in front-wheel drive models all the way up to 1,369kg in rear-wheel drive models.

Features of the Mercedes Vito

Mercedes vans are renowned for being heavily equipped with a range of safety features, the Vito is no exception, as standard you receive: driver and passenger airbags, ESP system, ABS brakes, ASR skid control, EBD brakeforce distribution, BAS hydraulic brake assist, LAC load adaptive control, TSA trailer stability assist and EUC understeer control. The Vito also has the option of Lane Keeping Assist and a distance warning system!
