The Mercedes Sprinter is an iconic large van renowned for its durability, carrying capacity and overall quality. Today our team of van experts at Vansdirect got hands on with the Mercedes Sprinter van!
The Mercedes Sprinter van is the largest van in a thriving Mercedes vans range renowned for quality, from the Mercedes Citan small van right the way up to the Sprinter van and Mercedes X-Class pick-up. This is the third generation of Sprinter van, with the iconic large van going at it alone for this model and ending its collaboration with the Volkswagen Crafter van.
The latest generation of Mercedes Sprinter van has gained all sorts of plaudits in its short lifespan in the large vans market, including being touted as the ’Most intelligently connected van the world has ever seen’. Let’s take a look!
This van may by all new for the third generation, however from the outside it is unmistakably a Mercedes Sprinter van. The design appears to be an evolution of Sprinter vans that have gone before but with slender new headlights that feature LED bulbs on higher spec models, as well as a more upright windscreen and blistered wheelarches. The iconic three star badge prominently distinguishes the Sprinter van from its rivals as before.
Perhaps where the biggest transformation has taking place in the new Sprinter van, Mercedes vans have brought over various features from their luxurious passenger car range and despite hard-wearing plastics still featuring heavily, there is more luxury than ever before. The cabin of the new van is better sound-proofed than before with a flock finish for the roof lining and bulkhead behind the seats.
The dashboard of the new van is well laid out, whilst a particularly prominent feature is the latest MBUX 10.25-inch infotainment system. The touchscreen can be controlled from the multifunction steering wheel or by using voice control, ‘Hey Mercedes’. Just be careful not to say Mercedes in normal conversation as you’ll set the system off.
Another area where Mercedes vans have significantly improved the new Mercedes Sprinter van is with its load carrying ability. There’s four body lengths to choose between for the RWD model and three lengths of FWD model, the FWD model gets a lower load floor and extra 50kg of payload to make it ideal for multi drop courier drivers. However it’s the RWD model which offers the largest carrying capacity and that’s what we got our hands on! In fact this model was L4 in length meaning a staggering 17 cubic meters of load volume was available to us.
The diesel engine range of the Sprinter van may be the same as previously, however there is a more refined feel whilst driving the new model. The steering of the new Sprinter feels very light, this is because it now comes with speed-sensitive power steering which adjusts its assistance depending on how fast you are travelling. At low speeds there’s hosts of assistance, making parking and turns in the road easy to complete, whilst at higher speeds it feels more solid and stable.
