While this is one vehicle to file under ‘an answer to a question no-one asked’, it so transpires that it is indeed possible to turn a Skoda Superb into a rather funky-looking pick-up truck.
This is the Skoda L&K 130 and it is essentially a Superb estate that has been chopped and converted into a pick-up truck, specifically to transport bicycles with ease.
The bicycle-racking theme is no coincidence. In fact, the L&K 130 name is a nod to Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement having founded Skoda 130 years ago as a bicycle maker.
Even more fittingly, Skoda has a substantial presence in cycling events around the world, not least the Tour de France where its vehicles are deployed as the communication and camera vehicle that runs with the cyclists.
The one-off is the product of Skoda’s ‘Vocational Car’, which are often commissioned to let their imaginations run wild to come up with a wacky concept that asks ‘what if?’.
Ultimately, the Skoda Superb Pick-Up sees its roof beyond the C-pillar removed to leave a short flat bed behind the rear-window.
At its standard length, the L&K 130 is designed to fit two bicycles attached with the rear wheel on the flat bed and the front wheel on the roof at a 35-degree angle,
However, the L&K 130 can also extend its flat-bed by the push of a button using a rack-and-pinion mechanism, far enough to house two stand-up bicycles.
It isn’t just the rear-end that has seen significant modification either. Indeed, the L&K 130 can be accessed at the rear by a door that can either slide or be opened in a conventional manner.
Once inside, the L&K 130 has a single rear seat with the other taken up by a cool box, while both the rear and front passengers get their own dashboard display showing live up-to-the-moment cycle race data.
So, what is the likelihood of the Skoda L&K 130 ever making production? Well, without four-wheel drive and a limited flat bed versus the current crop of pick-up trucks out there it seems unlikely.
Then again, the cycling industry is huge so maybe – just maybe – Skoda might have just chanced upon a niche market!
