Wild Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck Continues Bonkers Goodwood Tradition
The great and very good of the motoring world has been descending on Sussex for the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed with Ford taking centre stage for its latest commercial vehicle-turned-wild racer, the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck.
The Blue Oval has developed a habit over the years for taking its comparatively humdrum commercial range and creating something out-of-this-world to showcase its sporting heritage, with the Ford F-150 the latest model to get a bonkers upcycle.
While a rare sight on UK roads, the Ford F-150 pick-up truck holds sway as the best-selling model in the United States, so it stands to reason that it would one day get exotic racing spin-off.
The result is the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, which was created specially to tackle the famed Pikes Peak Hillclimb in 2024 but is now getting its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Pikes Peak Hillclimb is an annual point-to-point race to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado.
Hosting its inaugural race in 1916, the event has grown to become a showcase for all things wild-and-wonderful with countless manufacturers developing special one-off racers with the single aim of setting new records on the 20km ascent.
Manufacturers including Volkswagen, Suzuki, Peugeot, Audi, Porsche and Hyundai have all tackled the event in a factory capacity, while Ford currently holds the record in the Open category with its electric Ford SuperVan 4.2.
For 2024, however, it entered the electric Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck and promptly smashed the Open class record in qualifying, even if technical issues prevented it from beating Ford’s own record on race day.
Now the model will attempt the shorter but no less spectacular Goodwood Hillcimb where the 1600hp electric powertrain and extreme bodywork – designed to generate 6000 pounds of downforce at 150mph - will likely blow spectators away.
After all, just look at that rear-wing!
The SuperTruck is the latest in a line of ‘Super’ commercial conversions that follow on from several Super Vans based on the Ford Transit over the years, many of which have received their public debuts at Goodwood.
It comes as Ford prepares to ramp up its involvement in motorsport after a few years on the sidelines. Next year will see the name return to F1 as the official engine partner of Red Bull Racing, while it will also compete in the World Endurance Championship from 2027.
