The Best Place To Work In The UK For Tradespeople Is

The East Midlands has come out on top of a survey that studies the best areas in the UK to work as part of the trade industry.

The nationwide survey, conducted by Volkswagen Commercial, focused on asking tradespeople how many hours they worked per week and how far they travel for jobs as a means of determining a correlation with work stress.

According to its findings, tradespeople working in the East Midlands reported less stress, worked fewer hours and completed shorter commutes to jobs than most other UK regions.

The survey found that on average UK tradespeople work 9.25 hours a day, while commutes extend as far as 88.37 miles per day.

Participants were also asked to comment on whether they had turned down jobs as a consequence of mental health considerations and to state whether they felt overwhelmed with stress at least once per week.

Overall, an average of 3.58 days of work were lost due for mental health reasons, while 39% of respondents claimed to feel overwhelmed each week.

With these averages in mind, tradespeople in the East Midlands gave positive feedback with better-than-national-average results across the board. On average, an East Midlands tradesperson will work 9.03 hours a week, 30% claimed to have been stressed at least once each week and the average work commute was 67.95 miles.

Second on VW’s index was Northern Ireland. However, while it’s strong final score is assisted by a low average for working hours (8.32 hours) and commuting distance (75.06 miles), alarmingly as many as 71% admitted to feeling overwhelmed at least once a week.

At the other end of the scale, tradespeople in London emerged with the least flattering scores.

The capital city posted the second highest average weekly worked hours of 9.54 hours (West Midlands was top with 9.81 miles), while tradespeople averaged a tiring 103.39 miles for work commute.

“Running a business is never easy, and that’s why van drivers up and down the country are asking for more support from us to keep them on the road.

“The services we provide for our customers – including our comprehensive roadside assistance, fixed-cost maintenance, tailored servicing plans and more – are all designed to deliver exactly that.”
