New Ford Transit Custom - Up close and personal
The NEW Ford Transit Custom has been hotly anticipated, with the new face-lift bringing a new front end and whole host of modifications from its predecessor. Today at Vansdirect we got up close and personal with the New Transit Custom and share our experience with you!
Introduction to the new Ford Transit Custom
The Ford Transit Custom has been the UK's best-selling new van for some time now, so you may question if the new face-lift is even necessary, with the existing model dominating the medium van segment and the whole of the UK new van market. Ford vans have boasted that the new model is more "refined and sophisticated than ever before," with more technology and innovative features to bring the joy back in to your working day.
Features of the new Ford Transit Custom
Inside the cab
The van we got to play with was in high spec Limited Trim as was loaded with standard features, including the latest SYNC 3 infotainment system from Ford vans. SYNC 3 works with an 8" Colour TFT touchscreen which allows you to control your phone music and navigation system on the go. We were also to make ourselves warm and comfortable with a lumbar adjustable driver's seat with heating. We felt the cabin was luxurious without compromising practicality, a leather trimmed steering wheel is accompanied by practical features including a dual front passenger seat with underseat stowage and a lockable glove box.
Load area
The load area is separated from the cab area by a full metal bulkhead. Just like its predecessor, the load area can be accessed via a left-side sliding doors or from the rear with doors that open to 180 degrees. The bulkhead included a load-through facility which has decreased slightly in length from the previous model, with the facility now only reaching to the end of the passenger bench seat, decreasing load-through length but increasing safety. The load-through facility can be held open by a magnet. We also found the same 6.0 cubic metres of load volume as its predecessor on our L1H1 model, more than big enough to fit an 8x4 sheet and 3 Europallets.
Exterior
When looking at the new Ford Transit Custom from outside, the distinguishing feature from previous models is the new front-end featuring the new three-bar front grille. The headlights are also slimmer than on the model it is replacing and front parking sensors are also featured. Changes aren't as apparent at the rear of the new van, however this Limited spec model featured rear parking sensors, a body-coloured rear bumper and 16 inch 5-spoke alloy wheels.
How was the new Ford Transit Custom van to drive?
What everyone really wants to know, how does the new van drive? The answer is, incredibly impressive. In conjunction with the fantastic driving position, the new van offered light and responsive steering and improved levels of refinement, with lower engine noise particularly on the motorway. The new van also had a whole host of features to make the drive more convenient and comfortable, including a quickclear heated windscreen which allowed us to get up and running almost instantaneously despite the weather. Cruise control with an adjustable speed limiter came in particularly handy when testing the van on the motorway, also particularly helpful were automatic lights and wipers when rain was around. We also made use of Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system, using live traffic updates to change our route and get the new van back to Vansdirect HQ as soon as possible!
