2025 Mercedes-Benz Citan: Everything You Need To Know

To say the Mercedes-Benz Citan was a significant launch for the German company when it was first introduced in 2012 would be something of an understatement.
This was the first all-new model to join Mercedes-Benz’s well-established and globally successful commercial line-up alongside the Vito and Sprinter since 1995.
While not entirely its own creation – unlike the Vito and Sprinter – the Renault Kangoo-based Citan for a time formed a full-strength commercial line-up for Mercedes-Benz together with the X-Class pick-up truck.
While the X-Class would be short-lived, the Citan is now in its second-generation as a premium small van option lining up against the more business-orientated Citroen Berlingo, Ford Transit Connect and Volkswagen Caddy.
Of course, the Citan has that attractive three-pointed star on the front-end, but with its underpinnings forged from Renault mechanicals, is it worth your consideration against a glut of quality opponents in the small van sector?
Is the Mercedes-Benz Citan Just a Renault Kangoo with a Different Badge?
Like most of its competitors in the small van space, the Mercedes-Benz Citan is another badge-engineered model derived from existing mechanicals.
In this case, the Citan shares its underpinnings with the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Townstar, while it also joins those two models in being constructed in Renault’s Maubeuge factory in France.
To its credit, the Citan isn’t an entire ‘cut-copy-paste’ exercise like the Stellantis quartet with Mercedes-Benz endowing it with its own unique look with a front-end inspired by the B-Class.
Moreover, it also gets its own Mercedes-Benz themed interior with unique dashboard design more in-keeping with the Vito and Sprinter, not to mention the brand’s own high quality MBUX infotainment platform accessed via a 7-inch screen.

Mercedes-Benz Citan Payload Capacity:
L1 – 428-664kg
L2 – 593-688kg
Crew Van – 634-789kg
The Mercedes-Benz Citan is available with the choice of two body lengths – branded L1 and L2 – while there is also a Crew Van that can seat up to five people.
Notably, the Citan has been re-engineered by Mercedes-Benz to put a greater emphasis on driver comfort over outright cargo space, as demonstrated by the German firm opting for its own interior design and ergonomics.
As a result, in the Citan the driver sits further back than in the Kangoo and Townstar, while there is a curved bulkhead which eats into some of the load bay.
It means the Citan cannot match the Kangoo or Townstar for cargo space with the L1 offering 2.9 cubic metres, while the L2 is good for 3.6 cubic metres.
It is also lacking comparatively in terms of payload with diesel-powered versions of the Citan in L1 and L2 guise offering between 486-688kg, while payload for the electric eCitan is listed as 428-616kg.
For the most generous payload in the Citan range, opt for the Crew Van which goes all the way up to 789kg but demands that you take into account the weight of any extra passengers you carry on the second row of seats.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is available with the choice of two powertrains – diesel and electric.
Those versions of the 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine are available with the entry-level 110 offering 94bhp, while the more powerful generates 114bhp.
Both offer similar levels of torque at 260 and 270Nm respectively, while there isn’t too much difference in economy with the 110 capable of hitting 53mpg, while the 112 achieves 50mpg.
It makes them among the most frugal and the cleanest models in the small van class by emitting up to 152g/km of CO2.
Moreover, the recent addition of an electric powertrain for the Mercedes-Benz eCitan provides an even more economical solution.
The 45kWh battery is borrowed from Renault and is good for 122bhp, making it the most powerful model in the Citan range.
As well as generating zero emissions, the eCitan goes up to 176 miles in terms of range (WLTP Combined), while it also offers a rapid recharge time of just 38mins.
