Master of its Trade: 2025 Peugeot E-Expert Review

Master of its Trade: 2025 Peugeot E-Expert Review

As one of the UK’s best-selling mid-size commercial vehicles, the Peugeot E-Expert is carrying a lot of responsibility on its shoulders for furthering the positive message about electric vans – but is it an Expert in this burgeoning new field?

Model as Tested: Peugeot E-Expert Professional Standard
Power: 75kWh (Electric)
Supplied: Vertu Peugeot Sunderland

Of the estimated 4.2 million vans currently criss-crossing the country on the road right now, medium-sized vans do a lot of the heavy-lifting – both figuratively and literally.

Models like the Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic and this, the Peugeot Expert, perennially count themselves among the most popular mid-size vans on sale.

However, the commercial vehicle landscape is steadily shifting as greater emphasis is placed on electrifying the nation’s van network.

The importance can’t be underestimated. A third of all CO2 emissions on UK roads come from diesel-fuelled vans and it is estimated that if each of those 4.2 million vans were to turn electric tomorrow, it’d deliver CO2 savings greater than the total carbon footprint of Sweden!

While that isn’t going to happen overnight, that doesn’t mean there isn’t the choice to do so with even the most sought-after new vans offering up an electric alternative to their fuel-sipping siblings.

Among them is the Peugeot E-Expert, which has swapped an ICE for a battery without – according to the French manufacturer - losing the very strengths of what makes it such a popular van.

So, does the E-Expert make a clever choice? Vansdirect puts in the miles to find out...

One Van, Five Reviews

We’d forgive you for feeling a case of deja vu when you’re out on the roads these days.

Even if you don’t know too much about vans, it might not have escaped your notice that there are a lot of very similar looking commercial vehicles pounding the streets of the UK.

Indeed, after FIAT-Chrysler absorbed PSA – consisting of Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall – to form the Stellantis Group in 2021, it has merged the commercial divisions to essentially spin the same van from four different brands.

Not only that, but Toyota Europe has even gotten in on the act to join the assembly line, while Iveco will make it six with their own interpretation in 2026.

It means there is ultimately little to separate six mid-size vans – the Citroen Dispatch, FIAT Scudo, Iveco eJolly, Peugeot Expert, Toyota Proace and Vauxhall Vivaro.

In fact, from most angles, you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between the sextet, despite the exterior – particularly at the front – being the only discernible way to tell them apart from one another.

With identical dimensions, engine range, interiors, features and even technical specification figures, it means reviewing one of these vans is tantamount to testing all six (though all but the Iveco are sold in the UK).

What sets the models apart for you specifically will come down to whether you live close to a particular dealership or you’re swayed by a brand’s aftersales care... but beyond that, one model is no better or worse than the other.

Peugeot E-Expert – The Direct Verdict

Leasing a mid-size electric van is more than simply choosing the best model. You need to take into account your daily commute, the demands of your business and the accessibility to facilities for charging to take the plunge on an EV. Beyond these factors though, driving the Peugeot E-Expert imposes no compromise over its diesel equivalent – it’s frisky to drive, easy to park, permits a sizeable payload and is very spacious, just with none of the cost of fuelling.

Lease the Peugeot E-Expert if...

- You require a large payload capacity
- Your commute regularly involves low speed environments
- You can easily charge at home or have easy access to recharging facilities

Peugeot E-Expert: Dimensions, Load Bay & Practicality

The Peugeot E-Expert is available in two lengths – Standard (L1) and Long (L2).

Our test model was the Standard length measuring 4981mm with a 3275mm wheelbase. Opt for the Long and this grows to 5331mm but retains the same wheelbase as the extension is located behind the rear axle.

In Standard guise, the E-Expert offers a competitive 5.3 cubic metres of cargo space and while there is nothing beyond H1 in height, it means the Peugeot can duck beneath restricted areas and car parks with ease.

Access is attained using wide set sliding doors on either side, a feature not shared by many other models in this class. It helps to make loading and unloading considerably easier by being able to enter from both sides of the vehicle.

Moreover, the 50:50 split rear-doors can be opened either to 90-degrees and all the way around to 180-degree barn style to easily swallow a Euro pallet and allow a forklift to approach without catching any bodywork.

Our test model – the entry-level trim in the E-Expert range – does without the Moduwork load-through flap that allows longer items to be stowed securely at the expense of the bench front seat, but it is available as standard on Asphalt and Sport trims.

Peugeot E-Expert: Weights, Payloads & Towing

While there remains a slight compromise where it comes to payload when switching from diesel to electric power, the Peugeot E-Expert in L1 guise comfortably exceeds a tonne for carrying capacity.

This 1220kg maximum payload compares well with equivalent diesel-fuelled Experts, which range between 1173-1384kg by comparison.

It means the E-Expert’s payload capacity is competitive with other electric rivals in the medium van space, matching up to the Ford Transit Custom and Volkswagen e-Transporter, while bettering the Mercedes-Benz eVito.

Towing capacity, however, is limited to 870kg braked capacity compared with 2500kg achieved by the diesel versions.

Peugeot E-Expert: Range, Charging & Running Costs

As competition grows in the medium electric van market, the race is on for manufacturers to demonstrate superior range potential compared with other models in the class.

For the Peugeot E-Expert, this is one of its strengths. Official company figures rate the E-Expert as being capable of driving 230 miles on a single charge.

It makes the Peugeot – together with its Citroen/FIAT/Toyota/Vauxhall siblings – the most frugal converted mid-size van with only dedicated electric models, such as the Farizon SV, Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo and Kia PV5, able to go further.

Much will depend on how you drive the Peugeot, but the range gauge proves refreshingly accurate at low speeds, particularly if you stick in Eco driving mode.

After a weekend of driving a combination of motorways, towns and country lanes amounting to approximately 350 miles, the E-Expert required two trips to the recharging station.

While it wasn’t always easy to find a CCS-equipped station that worked along this route, once connected the E-Expert impresses with a rapid recharge that replenished the battery sufficiently in little more than 30 minutes (or around the time it takes to order and eat a Big Mac meal).

Still, to achieve the anticipated savings associated with recharging rather than refuelling a diesel van, it is recommended to invest in a wall box located either at home or at a business premises as it will certainly recover the cost of installation in time.

The Peugeot E-Expert is, however, eligible for the government’s Plug-in Van Grant (PiVG) which slashes up to £5,000 off its list price until at least 2027.

Peugeot E-Expert: Performance & Driving

Choose the Peugeot E-Expert with its 75kWh capacity battery and by extension its three drive modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – serve up three different characters when used on the road.

While the settings are primarily intended to give you options at the expense of or to the benefit of range, there is a noticeable difference between them from behind the wheel.

The E-Expert defaults to Normal mode upon each start-up and it is this version that acts most like the standard diesel. While there is none of the gruffness that comes with being sat behind a mechanical item and its various moving parts, the E-Expert pulls strongly with none of the lag that comes with crunching through a gearbox.

Switch it up to Sport, however, and the accelerator becomes more sensitive. It’s the setting that makes full use of the 134bhp and 270Nm of torque on tap and gives the E-Expert a surprising amount of zest when exiting roundabouts or pulling out to overtake on a dual carriageway. It comes at the expense of mileage though with around 10 miles being wiped off compared to Normal mode.

Going the other way, Eco mode is where you’ll most likely spend much of your time if you travel in low-speed zones. While you will feel the greater resistance in the throttle, once you gain momentum the E-Expert in Eco mode will sit happily at 60mph without much hassle.

Behind the wheel, the light steering is a boon around town and goes a long way to masking the E-Expert’s relatively large size, not to mention make it much easier to park than you might expect.

Peugeot E-Expert: Cab & Interior

The Peugeot E-Expert received a significant update in 2024 which resulted in a revamped front-end in line with other models in the French firm’s range, a raft of new safety assistance features and – most importantly – an overhauled interior.

The changes introduced a new 10-inch infotainment screen featuring a DAB radio, Bluetooth capability and crisp, clear menus for adjusting the safety assistance settings.

It represents a big improvement over its predecessor, more so when you connect Android Auto or Apple CarPlay via WiFi to mirror your phone display.

Better still, the E-Expert has retained the physical ventilation, heating and air-conditioning controls rather than delegating them into fiddly positions on the screen, making it much easier to adjust the temperature on the move.

The new screen is complemented by a fresh digital instrument cluster showing speed, available range and a dial that swings to show when you’re using more power or coasting charge back into the battery. You can even choose between five different display options if you so wish.

The spacious cargo bay doesn’t come at the expense of cabin room either with three adults able to sit comfortably abreast from one another. There is also decent adjustment on the driver’s seat despite the upright positioning of the bulkhead.

Moreover, build quality feels solid and there is ample interior storage space with a large dashboard glovebox, cubbies above the centre console and room for knick-knacks under the seats too.

Peugeot E-Expert: Reliability

The Peugeot E-Expert comes with a warranty that runs to 3-years or 100,000 miles from new, whichever comes first.

Peugeot also benefits from a vast dealer network supplemented by its close association with the Stellantis Group commercial vehicle brands.

It allows the E-Expert to be serviced and maintained easily from Vauxhall, Citroen and FIAT commercial dealerships if necessary. Moreover, parts can be easily sourced from Stellantis’ huge new distribution facility located in Ellesemere Port.

Peugeot E-Expert: Safety & Security

The 2025-specification Peugeot E-Expert has earned a four-star rating from EuroNCAP.

Peugeot E-Expert: FULL VERDICT

In this entry level guise, the Peugeot E-Expert fulfils its brief to be a simple yet practical medium van regardless of the technical wizardry going on under the skin.

If you have crunched the numbers to set your heart on electric for your next van, the E-Expert offers impressive mileage for its size, while its fast-recharging capability goes a long way to allaying those range anxiety fears.

At its heart though, the E-Expert remains a solid, well thought out van with a payload capacity that matches that of diesel models.
