It Is Now Much Easier To Install An EV Charger

Businesses considering a switch to electric vans have been given a boost with the news that you no longer need planning permission to install an EV charge point.

The change in policy comes as the government attempts to ease the transition away from petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles in favour of more environmentally friendly electric power.

Under previous rules, planning permission had to be submitted to install an EV charger, a process that in some cases could take months.

The decision is intended to remove one of the key issues deterring businesses and private owners making the switch to electric vehicles, including vans.

Indeed, the plans are considered to be especially beneficial for businesses as it would allow EV chargers to be installed at places of work without so much red tape.

Moreover, the government has removed the restriction on installing EV chargers within two metres of a public highway, though doing so still requires planning permission.

Lillian Greenwood MP, Future of Roads Minister, said: “The Government is “cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more chargepoints to power from and less red tape to deal with.”

The decision comes in the wake of a scathing report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which claimed the government’s 2030 net zero target is being threatened by the slow rollout of electric charging points, claiming it has a significant knock-on effect of businesses adopting electric vans for their fleets.

Though sales of BEV (battery electric vehicle) cars have risen considerably, it remains behind the mandated national target, while the outlook is even worse for vans with only 8% of new van sales being electric-powered.
