GWM POER300 Pick-Up Truck Confirmed for UK Debut

GWM POER300 Pick-Up Truck Confirmed for UK Debut

The GWM POER300 will set its sights on the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux when it becomes the latest entry into the competitive pick-up truck segment this Autumn, it has been confirmed.

Having teased plans to throw its hat into the pick-up ring last month, Great Wall Motors (GWM) has now formally revealed the GWM POER300 (pronounced ‘Power’) will lead its charge back into the class.

In fact, the POER300 represents a return to the pick-up segment for GWM ten years on from making a little bit of automotive history by becoming the first Chinese marque to launch a new model in the UK with the Great Wall Steed.

Though that model was short lived, GWM has since returned with a new passenger car range as just one of several Chinese firms arriving on these shores for a slice of the UK market share.

For its newest model, GWM therefore turns back to the pick-up segment with the POER300, a UK-specification version of the GWM Cannon Ute that has proven popular in Australia.

Just the one engine option will be available, a 2.4-litre turbodiesel generating 183PS of power and 480Nm of torque. This puts right the POER300 in direct line with equivalent rivals like the Ranger, Hilux and Isuzu D-Max.

GWM says the POER300 will achieve 32.7mpg on a combined cycle, has a payload capacity that exceeds 1000kg and can tow upwards of 3500kg, can be had with a nine-speed automatic gearbox with low range capability and multiple all-terrain modes (Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud and Sand).

The POER300 has full-time four-wheel drive and an electronically activated rear differential lock for enhanced off-road ability, plus an approach angle of 27-degrees, a departure angle of 25-degrees and 230mm ground clearance.

There will be three trim levels – Lux, Ultra and Vanta – with even the base Lux model offering a raft of premium features, including a 12.3-inch centre console touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, leatherette seats, keyless entry, rear parking sensors and extensive safety assist features.

Upgrade to the Ultra and it’ll add heated/ventilated seats, ambient lighting, privacy glass, a sunroof, tailgate step and 360-degree camera, while the Vanta gets black-out exterior trim, wheelarches and black alloy wheels. All models come with a 5-year/125,000-mile warranty.

Crucially, despite the generous kit list, the GWM POER300 – which is only available as a Double-Cab - it is set to undercut its rivals on starting price when it arrives in showrooms in September.
