Great Wall Returns to Pick-Up Sector with GWM Cannon

Great Wall Returns to Pick-Up Sector with GWM Cannon

Great Wall has all-but-confirmed plans to re-enter the pick-up segment after teasing the launch of a new model understood to be the GWM Cannon.

The manufacturer made a little bit of history over a decade ago by becoming the first firm from China to launch a new model in the UK with the Great Wall Steed.

Though that model was short lived, the manufacturer has since returned to these shores with a new passenger car range amid a wave of firms from China currently battling for market share in the UK.

As such, Great Wall Motors – otherwise known under the acronym GWM – is set to return to the pick-up class with the GWM Cannon. Indeed, while the firm hasn’t outright confirmed exactly which model is on its way, it left little to the imagination by saying customers will be able to ‘pick-up a capable and tough vehicle’.

The model in question is not brand-new per se having been on sale in Australia for some months.

However, with Australia also adopting right-hand drive vehicles, it opens an opportunity for GWM to follow suit in the UK.

Set to go head-to-head with the Isuzu D-Max and Maxus T60 MAX as arguably the more value orientated models in the pick-up class, the Cannon will also go up against current market leaders, such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Though full details are yet to be confirmed, the Australian-spec version of the GWM Cannon is offered with the choice of a 163hp 400Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel or a 184 480Nm 2.4-litre turbodiesel.

Trim levels include Premium, Lux, Ultra, Vanta and XSR with the latter options geared more towards off-road use.

What isn’t confirmed is whether the larger GWM Cannon Alpha will make the trip over to the UK, not least because it is offered with as a plug-in hybrid, which would put it up against the newly launched Ford Ranger PHEV. With the recent change in Benefit-In-Kind tax rules, a PHEV version of the Cannon would potentially prove attractive.
