Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid Arrives To Electrify Pick-Up Class

Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid Arrives To Electrify Pick-Up Class

Europe’s most popular pick-up truck, the Ford Ranger, is now available with an electric powertrain for the first time as part of an all-new Plug-In Hybrid model on sale now.

The Ford Ranger PHEV combines both petrol and electric hybrid technology for a pick-up truck that vows to be cleaner and more frugal than the average diesel-fuelled equivalent model.

By mating a 2.3-litre petrol engine and 10-speed automatic gearbox with an 11.8kWh lithium-ion traction battery, the Ranger PHEV is capable of driving up to 26 miles on pure electric power alone, thus emitting zero exhaust emissions.

According to Ford’s research, 26 miles is further than more than half of Ranger owners travel each day. Recharging takes four hours using a single-phase 16-amp charger, while energy can also be captured when coasting off the pedals.

With 277bhp on tap, the Ranger PHEV is the most powerful model in the range – more so than the 3.0-litre turbodiesel – while it also generates more torque at 697Nm.

It’s these figures that allow the Ford Ranger PHEV to retain all of the notable traits of driving a turbodiesel model, namely its 3500kg towing capacity, generous payload of up to one tonne and off-roading ability.

The Ranger PHEV goes on sale with a choice of three trim levels: XLT, Stormtrak and Wildtrak.

Ford Ranger PHEV A Tonic To BIK Tax Pick-Up Charge

The Ford Ranger PHEV arrives following the move by the UK government to reclassify double cab pick-up trucks as company cars rather than commercial vehicles.

It has led to a readjusting of the Benefit-In-Kind Tax that sees fees based on emissions figures instead.

With pick-up trucks often equipped with bigger engines and heavier bodywork, it means emissions levels are higher than most passenger vehicles.

As such, the Ranger PHEV – which has significantly lower CO2 figures with its petrol-electric hybrid mix – could reduce monthly BIK charges from around £700 to as little as £350, according to Ford.

As it stands, the Ranger PHEV is a unique alternative option in the pick-up truck class. Indeed, while Toyota offers a 48V mild hybrid version of its Hilux to help reduce emissions, the Ranger PHEV is substantially more effective.

There are signs that the trend for conventionally powered pick-up trucks is shifting though with a handful of new electric models on the horizon, including the next generation KGM Musso due later in the year, while Toyota is readying the launch of the eTerron 9 EV too.
