Ford E-Transit Custom Gets A Grip With All-Wheel Drive Addition
The all-electric Ford E-Transit Custom range is set to grow with the addition of an all-wheel drive option from Spring 2026.
The medium van – which currently dominates the UK sales charts – already boasts one of the most comprehensive line-ups in its class with a choice of turbodiesel engine or electric (E-Transit) powertrain mated to front, rear or all-wheel drive systems.
As it stands, the electric E-Transit Custom is offered with rear-wheel drive, but from next year will expand its offerings to include an adapted version of Ford’s AWD (all-wheel drive) platform as well.
AWD is already offered as part of the Ford Transit Custom range on selected models with a turbodiesel engine, including the SUV-inspired Trail trim.
Engineered to provide more grip and stability on low traction roads, the Transit Custom AWD blurs the lines between the benefits of an off roader while still retaining substantial cargo capacity.
Ford engineers have developed the AWD system for the E-Transit Custom by modifying the existing rear-wheel drive layout with an additional high-power electric drive unit for the front wheels.
Two independent front and rear drive units allow for torque to all four wheels, improving traction and giving it capability on steep inclines even with a heavy payload.
The E-Transit Custom is available with the choice of three power outputs from the 65kWh battery – 136PS, 218PS and (exclusively in MS-RT trim) 285PS. While range is likely to be impacted by the all-wheel drive system versus the existing rear-wheel drive set-up, the current E-Transit Custom can achieve up to 209 miles as a reference.
