Female Van Ownership Has Doubled Since 2010

The number of female van owners has doubled over the last 15 years, according to new data.
Vans currently account for 12 per cent of all vehicles on our road, it amounted to approximately 4.8 million being in service last year.
It means there are more vans registered on UK roads than there has ever been, a status that is reflected in other statistics rising in tandem.
According to Direct Line Business Insurance, there has been a notable increase in the number of female owners of vans, doubling over the past 15 years. Though it only accounts for a relatively small 6% of the overall van ownership market, it is a sign of progress for gender diversity in the market.
Male owners do still account for 43% of the market – or around two million owners of vans – but fleet ownership has the largest share overall at 48%.
Another notable trend from the statistics is the average age of an LCV is up to 9.1 years. This compares to 8.4 years in 2020 and reflects an 8% increase in just five years.
The data also shows how the electric van market has stalled over the past three years with a steady six per cent of vans being sold in 2022, 2023 and 2024 being zero emission.
This, however, is projected to grow to around 8-9% for 2025, even if it is well adrift of the mandated ZEV target of 16%.
Eva Sandstra-Bennett, van product manager at Direct Line business insurance, commented: “A record number of vans on the road highlights strong commercial activity across the UK, which is good news for businesses. Analysis of the figures underlines the resilience of the UK’s van market despite recent supply side challenges.”
