2025 Maxus eTerron 9: Everything You Need To Know

2025 Maxus eTerron 9: Everything You Need To Know

The all-new Maxus eTerron 9 sees the Chinese marque double down on its attempts to corner the pick-up market – and this time it is doing so with the first four-wheel drive electric pick-up truck to launch in the UK.

As a sister brand to MG under the ownership of SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), Maxus has been steadily carving a niche for itself in the commercial vehicle sector.

Capitalising on the growing awareness of its panel van range – topped by the strong-selling Maxus Deliver 9 – the company is now turning its attention to shoring up its contenders in the competitive pick-up truck segment.

Replacing the Maxus T90 and slotting above the Maxus T60 MAX, the eTerron9 debuts a strong new look for Maxus with its chunky, utilitarian design and broad stance helping it stand out against similarly muscular rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

But it is its electric powertrain – an unusual feature in the pick-up class – that headlines the eTerron 9. So, is it worth the investment?

Which Electric Pick-up Trucks Are Available?

Not only is this not Maxus’ first pick-up truck, it’s not even Maxus’ first electric pick-up truck.

Indeed, Maxus has previously tested the waters with the Maxus T90, a converted electric pick-up truck that was the first of its kind in the UK. Significantly though, the T90 was rear-wheel drive only, while its conversion from a standard diesel model demanded design compromises that limited its range and performance.

The Maxus eTerron 9, however, has been designed as an electric pick-up truck from the outset and as such has a much more powerful battery that provides significantly improved range and performance without demanding any significant changes to the load bay or versatility.

It is also four-wheel drive this time, putting it right in the mix with the likes of the Ranger, Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok.

For now, the eTerron 9 exists in a class-of-one as the only electric pick-up truck on sale. Indeed, the sector has been slow on the uptake to integrate electric due to the difficulties of converting existing models, many of which have underpinnings that were developed more than a decade ago.

It won’t have the class to itself for long though. Indeed, the huge selling – and category standard – Ford Ranger is already dipping its toe into electric waters with the recent launch of a plug-in hybrid version, which offers 27 miles of uninhibited electric running or significantly reduced running costs overall.

Early next year will see the Isuzu D-Max gain an electric option achieving around 160 miles on pure electric power alone, while a new Toyota Hilux is in the works and will be built with the option of a battery.

Elsewhere, the next generation KGM Musso – already on sale in Asia – is being offered as an EV for the first time, while there is a strong chance a PHEV option will extend to the Ranger’s sister model, the Volkswagen Amarok.

2025 Maxus eTerron 9: Dimensions, Loads & Body Styles

MAXUS eTERRON 9 DIMENSIONS Double Cab
Length 5500mm
Height 1860mm
Wheelbase 3300mm
Load Length 1561mm
Load Width 1500mm
Load Depth 535mm
Max Payload 620kg
Braked Towing Capacity 3500kg
Gross Vehicle Weight 3500kg

While it is a successor to the T90, the Maxus eTerron 9 is to be one of two pick-up trucks in the Chinese marque’s range.

It joins the recently updated Maxus T60 MAX in the range and duly sits above its diesel-equipped counterpart.

Beyond the powertrains, the two models are therefore set apart by the eTerron 9 being larger in terms of dimensions. More than that though, the eTerron 9 will become the largest pick-up truck in the sector when it hits the road.

Measuring 5500mm in length, the eTerron 9 is a substantial 180mm longer than the Ford Ranger, while it is 95mm longer than the next largest pick-up truck in the class, the KGM Musso Saracen +.

This doesn’t quite translate to the Maxus having the largest load bay in the class, though it remains usefully long. With a load length of 1561mm, it is down on the Ranger’s class-leading 1638mm, but longer than the Hilux and D-Max.

However, the eTerron 9 does have one practical feature that no other model in the class can match – its ‘frunk’. A storage space at the front of the vehicle, it acts as a small ‘trunk’ in lieu of an engine since the battery packs are located below the car.

Offering an additional 236-litres of space, it is enough for a large suitcase or a few smaller bags.

One compromise of the electric powertrain, however, is its overall heft, which explains why the gross vehicle weight is a full 3500kg and why payload is limited to 620kg. This is compared to rivals which all offer payload in excess of 1000kg.

Nevertheless, the eTerron 9 is capable of towing up to 3500kg, putting it right in line with its main rivals.

There are some nifty touches elsewhere too. By having a multi-link rear suspension, the eTerron 9 can be dropped down for easier loading or raised to tackle rough terrains, while the front seats can be folded back completely flat to create a bed-style area measuring 1.7m.

It is also possible to open the bulkhead between the loading bay and the rear seats. Fold the seats and you get an extended load bay for items such as timber, poles or a surf board.

2025 Maxus eTerron 9: Engine, Performance & Powertrains

MAXUS eTERRON 9 SPECS 102kWh Electric
Powertrain Electric
Battery Capacity 102.2kWh
Transmission Automatic
Max Power 436bhp
Max Torque 700Nm
Max Speed 118mph
0-62mph 5.0secs
Range [WLTP Comb] 267 miles
CO2 [WLTP] 0g/km

Just the one battery powertrain is offered with the Maxus eTerron 9, but it is a huge one.

With a capacity of 102kWh, the eTerron 9’s electric source is much larger than other EV models in the Maxus range, such as the Maxus eDeliver 9.

Moreover, its dual motor set-up – one at the front and one at the rear – makes the eTerron 9 a very powerful pick-up, equating to a very meaty 436bhp. By comparison, the Ford Ranger PHEV, which mates an 11.8kWh battery with a 2.3-litre petrol engine, generates 277bhp.

It’s also torquey with 700Nm of pull available, while the instant acceleration means the Maxus is capable of a 0-62mph time of around five seconds.

The power delivery doesn’t come at a huge expense of range either with 267 miles quoted by the manufacturer on a combined cycle. As a comparison, the upcoming Isuzu D-Max is limited to 160 miles.

And of course, being electric, the eTerron 9 generates zero emissions.
