2025 Ford Ranger Trims, Engines and Body Styles Explained

2025 Ford Ranger Trims, Engines and Body Styles Explained

In much the same way the Ford Transit Custom dominates the van sales charts, the Ford Ranger is the undisputed ‘King of the Pick-up Trucks’ – so which is best for you?

The historic marque enjoys a rich heritage when it comes to pick-up trucks with its super-size Ford F-150 regularly the top-selling vehicle in the United States, which earns it automatic status as one of the world’s best-selling models too.

While European-positioned pick-up trucks aren’t quite as imposing in size, they still do big numbers and with the Ranger, it is Ford that rules the roost on the continent too.

In fact, last year saw the Ford Ranger crowned Europe’s best-selling pick-up truck for the tenth consecutive year. So dominant was its position that it holds a mammoth 43.6% of the entire market – in other words almost 1 in 2 pick-up trucks sold in Europe are a Ford Ranger.

It’s no surprise then that Ford offers a wide and varied line-up to suit your needs and preferences, so much so that it has even broken the mould recently by adding a Plug-In Electric Hybrid version in a segment first.

So now seems like the perfect opportunity to break the Ford Ranger range down to see what makes each trim stand out...

Ford Ranger XL

Since many are wooed enough by the bulky looks and creature comforts to take delivery of a Ford Ranger in premium specification, it’s easy to forget that the pick-up truck is designed first and foremost to be a rugged working vehicle.

As such, the entry-level Ranger XL exists for those whose priority is to have a practical, off-roading workhorse that puts substance over style. As such, there is hard-wearing plastic bodywork, a conventional tailgate and steel wheels as standard.

It’s also the only trim in the range that is available in a Single Cab configuration, meaning it is not subject to the recent change in Benefit-In-Kind company car taxation policies. It can also be specified as a basic chassis cab too.

While the XL is also available as a Double Cab, all other trims are offered in Double Cab only.

It is available only with the entry-level 170PS version of the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine.

Ford Ranger XLT

Upgrade to the Ranger XLT and it gets more aesthetically appealing 16-inch alloy wheels and body-coloured bumpers, plus uprated suspension and a standard duty terrain pack.

It is also one of three trims that can be mated to the new PHEV model, which marries a 2.3-litre petrol engine to an 11.8kWh lithium-ion traction battery. Otherwise it is offered with a 170PS 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine.

Ford Ranger Tremor

The Ford Ranger Tremor is only available with a 205PS version of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine.

Upgraded features over the XLT include larger 17-inch, unique black alloy wheels, increased ride height and wider track, Bilstein dampers, all-terrain tyres, extended wheelarch mouldings finished in grey, twin front tow hooks and aluminium side steps.

ford-ranger

Ford Ranger Wildtrak

The most popular trim in the line-up, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak benefits from 18-inch alloy wheels, an aerodynamic sports hoop and grille/mirrors/sports hoop in grey accents.

On the inside there is partial-leather trim, ambient interior lighting, leather heated steering wheel, keyless start, heated seats, privacy glass, dual zone climate control and 12-inch multifunctional display.

It is offered in a selection engine options, including two diesels – a 2.0-litre generating 205PS and a 3.0-litre 240PS version – plus also the new PHEV powertrain.

Ford Ranger Wildtrak X

While similar to the Wildtrak, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak X is designed more for off-road use and therefore gains Bilstein dampers, a raised ride height, all-terrain tyres, an H-bar bumper and Standard Trail Turn Assist.

It is offered with just the choice of one engine, the 2.0-litre 205PS turbodiesel.

Ford Ranger Platinum

Billed as the more luxurious option in the Ranger line-up, the Ford Ranger Platinum gains unique 18-inch alloy wheels, LED Matrix glare free headlights, its own chrome-effect front grille design and special exterior detailing.

Inside, the Platinum has leather heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.4-inch driver’s instrument cluster, Bang & Olufsen audio system and a wireless phone charging space.

On the road, the Platinum benefits from 360-degree camera view and intelligent cruise control with stop and go functionality.

It is offered with just the 3.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine generating 240PS.

Ford Ranger Stormtrak

The newly added Ford Ranger Stormtrak is offered exclusively with the company’s new PHEV powertrain.

Slotting in above the XLT, the Stormtrak benefits from features unique to its plug-in hybrid powertrain, including a home charging cable, electronic automatic gearshift, a heavy duty terrain pack, electric stop-start system and uprated suspension.

Ford Ranger MS-RT

ford-ranger

The Ford Ranger MS-RT builds on the standard set by the similarly outrageously styled Ford Transit Custom with its bespoke 21-inch alloy wheels, unique (and eye-popping) exterior colours, unique front and rear bumpers with integrated diffuser, cab spoiler and unique leather/suede seating.

It is offered with the 3.0-litre turbodiesel EcoBlue engine generating 240PS, it also has a lower ride height compared with other models in the range and should not be considered for off-roading.

Ford Ranger Raptor

At the very top of the line-up is the uniquely positioned Ford Ranger Raptor.

Though it is based on the Ranger, the Raptor stands apart as its own sub-brand providing performance and aggression – both on and off-road - not seen anywhere else in the pick-up market.

The Ford Ranger Raptor is distinguished by its unique grille – emblazoned with Ford – increased ride height, black powder coated side steps, electronically controlled shock absorbers, underbody protection, selectable driving modes, unique leather seats and paddle-shifting gearbox.

The Ford Ranger Raptor is available in two turbodiesel engines – a 2.0-litre generating 210PS or an uprated twin-turbo 3.0-litre generating 292PS.

ford-ranger

Ford Ranger PHEV

The new Ford Ranger PHEV is designed to help significantly lower running costs by mating a 2.3-litre petrol engine with an 11.8kWh lithium ion battery.

By using just the battery – thus reducing your carbon emissions to zero – the Ranger PHEV can travel up to 26 miles without using fuel.

Moreover, as well as being the most economical powertrain choice in the range, with 281PS on tap, it’s also the most powerful with exception to the Raptor 3.0-litre EcoBlue.

Ford Ranger Body Styles

Ford Ranger Single Cab

The Ford Ranger Single Cab is exempt from the recent change in BIK rules regarding company vehicles, thus sits in a much lower tax bracket than the Double Cab.

However, it is only available with two seats and can only be mated to the entry-level Ford Ranger XL.

Ford Ranger Double Cab

The more popular Ford Ranger Double Cab comes with four doors and five seats, making it the more superior and practical choice should you use your pick-up truck for private as well as business reasons.
