Van drivers amongst the safest on UK's roads

Van drivers amongst the safest on UK's roads

Research conducted by telematics company Quartix has shown that accident rates connected to new vans are significantly lower than those for cars!

What the study showed

Information collated by Quartix shows that there were 1.5 times as many accidents involving injury for every 1,000 cars (just under six per 1,000) as for every thousand new vans (just under four per 1,000).

Quartix firstly identified the average mileage of new van drivers being significantly higher than that of cars (approximately 20,000 in comparison with 8,000), giving new van drivers' additional experience on the UK's roads.

The study was also broken down in terms of mileage, with the results showing that there are 3.8 times more serious accidents per every 100,000 miles travelled in cars as there are in new vans, with this rising to six times as many for a number of younger car drivers.

When questioned about the results and why they believed new van drivers to be safer, Andy Walters from Quartix stated: "These guys do it for a living." Walters also pointed out that while van insurance premiums are similar to those of young drivers, that van insurance premiums are increased by a number of smaller claims for minor dents received during work. He also pointed out the importance of van drivers keeping their new vans functioning, as time off the road would affect their livelihoods: "It can be expensive, it's a purpose built vehicle." He bluntly put that simply if new van drivers are without a van they may be "out of a job."

Who's most at risk?

Quartix identified younger drivers on rural roads as being the most likely to have a serious accident, due to "inappropriate speeding and inexperience." They believe that the 60mph national speed limit on many rural roads is too high for safe driving, whereas "professional drivers" (van drivers who drive for a living) can average 40mph on the same roads!
