Introduction to the Mitsubishi L200
The Mitsubishi is as versatile as it is comfortable: the new pick-up van is available in single cab, club cab and most popular one-tonne payload double cab models. Double cab models are available in no fewer than five trim levels depending on how many bells and whistles you desire: The range starts at 4Life working all the way up to Warrior and Top Spec Barbarian models, with both Warrior and Barbarian models are available with both 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmissions. The model we got to play with was automatic!
Features of the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian
Inside the cab
The cab is the perfect combination of practical and durable materials, with excellent refinement. The cab inside the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is highly luxurious with a premium leather interior and 'Barbarian' illuminated door entry guards and Blue LED footwell lighting adding that extra feel of class. The premium leather interior doesn't stop with seating (two in the front and three in the rear), with a leather steering wheel and leather gearshift knob.
Interior Technology
The Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian has a whole host of standard technology to assist you whilst driving, with features including: Electric windows, reversing camera, electric folding heated door mirrors with side indicators, bluetooth hands-free telephone connection with music streaming, satellite navigation and DAB radio with 7" touchscreen and dual zone climate control and air conditioning.
Exterior
The Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian certainly stands out from the crowd, the 17" alloy wheels present a commanding new pick-up van, side steps also allow easy access into the van, while illuminated door entry guards light up the pick-up. Barbarian models are also fitted with an exterior enhancement pack, with enhanced features including: mesh front grille, door handle recesses, fuel filler, tail lamp and tailgate handle bright trim. The tailgate on Barbarian models is a soft opening unit for ease of opening and closing without worrying about potential damage, while a rear bumper step gives easier access to the tailgate.
How did the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian drive?
We tested the pick-up with a phenomenal off-road reputation on more comfortable road surfaces to see how if it fared as well on-road. The Euro 6 compliant diesel engine provides you with a significant amount of power, while the fact that its aluminium helped to provide a fuel economy close to 40 miles to the gallon by reducing the weight. The L200 can boast that it is the first ever pick-up van with an aluminium engine. The Barbarian provided a smooth, comfortable and refined drive, with excellent and responsive handling combined with a powerful and economical engine, the pick-up also handled speed bumps with the minimum of fuss. The automatic gearbox was smooth and offered a relevant choice of gear under both acceleration and deceleration.
The heated front seats provided nice warmth after coming out of the ever cooling conditions, with the power driver's seat providing an excellent driving position and view of the road ahead. We were also intrigued by the LED daytime running lights, lane departure warning and rain and dusk sensors all designed for driver assistance and came in handy under challenging driving conditions. We also made use of the cruise control option whilst driving down the motorway.
The Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is a phenomenal top of the range pick-up van with all the standard features you could possibly require. Far from just a pretty face, the new pick-up van performs as well as it looks!
