What Are The Load Lengths Of Pick-Up Trucks 2025

What Are The Load Lengths Of Pick-Up Trucks 2025

Pick-up trucks have long been a popular buying or leasing choice for commercial purposes courtesy of their ability to haul big loads and venture off-road yet still provide a car-like driving experience.

By combining the qualities of four-wheel drive SUV with van-like load capacities, pick-up trucks – particularly double-cab models – often serve as both commercial workhorses and a family-friendly runabouts.

For this reason, there is some disparity between models when it comes to load length, that being the dimension of the cargo bay between the back of the cab and the tailgate.

But which pick-up truck models is most generous with cargo bay length?

Pick-Up Truck Body Styles

While all pick-up trucks are available as a double-cab with a full complement of five seats, a handful of models can be specified in different body styles. This therefore has an effect on the load length.

Single Cab – Often available in a model’s most basic form, a single cab is differentiated from the double cab by having just a single passenger compartment and therefore only two seats. The loss of a rear compartment therefore allows the load bay to be extended thus making single cabs particularly popular as commercial-only pick-ups.

Extended Cab – Extended cab pick-up trucks feature a rear compartment with either four or five seats, but the passenger area is smaller in dimension to that of double cabs. Extended cab models feature a small envelope-style entry door, referred to as ‘suicide doors’. These are doors that open in an opposite direction to that of the front doors, allowing for a larger opening aperture to the rear compartment. Extended cab models are best for those who carry rear passengers infrequently.

Double Cab – Each pick-up truck on sale in the UK right now is available as a Double Cab, meaning they have five seats and four full-size doors. This therefore makes them viable family cars, as well as being able to haul large cargo in a hard-wearing, strengthened load bay.

Ford Ranger

Single Cab – 2332mm
Double Cab – 1638mm

The best-selling pick-up truck in both the UK and Europe, the Ford Ranger is available in two body styles: Single Cab and Double Cab.

To consolidate that popularity status, the Ranger offers the largest load bay in Double Cab form, extending 1638mm from the passenger compartment bulkhead.

As well being the most practical model in its class, the Ranger impresses with the strength in depth within its line-up with three different engine options: 2.0-litre turbodiesel, 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel and, new for 2025, a 2.3-litre petrol plug-in hybrid.

Isuzu D-Max

Single Cab – 2290mm
Extended Cab – 1785mm
Double Cab – 1520mm

Unlike other models in this segment, the Isuzu D-Max can be specified in all three pick-up body styles – single, extended and double cab.

With this in mind, there is a D-Max to suit any need with a broad choice of trim levels across the three body styles from stripped back to luxurious. It is important to note that single cab models are exempt from the recent reclassification for BIK (benefit-in-kind) tax rules as they are still considered commercial vehicles.

The D-Max is also unique for being the only pick-up truck range to tips the scales at less than 2040kg. Each model in the line-up comes under this weight limit, meaning it is subject to the same speed limits on dual and single carriageways as passenger cars (70mph and 60mph respectively).

kgm-musso

KGM Musso

Double Cab – 1330mm
Double Cab (Plus) – 1610mm

The KGM Musso differs from other models in the pick-up segment by having two different load lengths in Double Cab specification.

The Musso is only available as a Double Cab, meaning a full five seats and four doors, but in standard specification only features a 1330mm load bay, some way down on its rivals here.

However, opt for the top-of-the-range Musso Saracen Plus and you’ll get an extended load bay at a more competitive 1610mm.

maxus-t60

Maxus T60

Double Cab – 1485mm

The Maxus T60 is only available in Double Cab specification and has the shortest load length of models in this segment at 1485mm.

However, it is worth noting the soon-to-arrive electric Maxus eTerron 9 is larger with a 1561mm length cargo bay.

toyota-hilux

Toyota Hilux

Single Cab – 2350mm
Extended Cab – 1840mm
Double Cab – 1555mm

Like the Isuzu D-Max, the Toyota Hilux can be specified in all three pick-up truck body styles.

Significantly, though the Double Cab version gives away almost 10cm in terms of length to the Ford Ranger, it gains all that space inside to make the rear compartment roomier for passengers.

This is demonstrated further by the Single Cab version being of superior length to both the Ranger and D-Max at 2350mm.

Volkswagen Amarok

Double Cab – 1624mm

By sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Ranger, the Volkswagen Amarok demonstrates a similar cargo length to that of its sister model at 1624mm

It therefore makes the German model, which is regarded as a more premium option in the segment, among the most practical both in terms of load length and for passengers.

The Amarok is only available as a Double Cab.
