No more mobile phone distractions for new van drivers!

Apple have lead the way with the announcement that the latest iPhone update iOS 11 will include a "Do Not Disturb While Driving" mode for users. The campaign asks the mobile phone manufacturers to think about an automatic function which identifies when the new van driver is driving and shuts down functions on their phone to prevent any possible distractions during this time. This function would prevent the phone from receiving phone calls, texts and app notifications during this time and automatically respond to people trying to contact the van driver with a message letting them know you are driving and will respond to their call or text when it is safe for you.
The feature could be overridden if the mobile phone is connected to a hands-free system which allows safe operation whilst driving the new van, otherwise your mobile phone will remain out of action until you have stopped driving.
In the UK, approximately 11 million UK drivers have disclosed that they make or receive phone calls or texts while driving, or even take photos or videos! This is clearly dangerous (not to mention illegal), with mobile phone distraction increasing the risk of an accident by four times! Studies have also show that just by hearing a mobile phone ring, the distraction is enough to increase your risk of being involved in an accident.
It is likely that other mobile phone manufacturers follow Apple's lead and add a "do not disturb while driving" mode to all of their new devices.
