New Ford Transit Custom PHEV
The New Ford Transit Custom PHEV which was revealed in Hannover in 2018 and got its UK's debut at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April 2019, promises 30 miles of zero emissions range and a claimed total range in excess of 300 miles with use of an on-board generator in the form of a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The front wheels of the new Ford van are driven by an electric motor which receives its power from a 14kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, this in turn receives its energy either by running the 1.0-litre engine or from the mains. The new Ford van will be able to offer the same load volume and same payload of a standard diesel powered model.
What's changed on the PHEV model?
The front bumper of the Ford Transit Custom PHEV has a charging port built in, allowing the new van to be recharged in five hours using a domestic 240 volt 10-amp power supply. This time drops to five hours if using a commercial 240 volt 16-amp or 32-amp supply. The driver can select between three EV modes: EV Auto, EV Now and EV Later. The first option, EV Auto is the default van setting and determines how to use the energy sources, EV Now allows full EV use until the battery dies, whilst EV Later has the aim of maintaining the current level of battery charge.
The rev counter in the instrument cluster is now replaced by a power gauge, whilst the engine temperature indicator is also replaced by a smaller gauge showing the battery state of charge. The trip computer has also received a reconfiguration to include EV mode indicators, maintenance alerts and display a warning when the van is plugged into a charger. Visible on all the screen displays is a status line showing distance to empty for both the battery and range extender.
Features
As is the case with the diesel alternatives, the new Ford Transit Custom PHEV will be loaded with standard features. Higher spec models in the range come with the Ford SYNC 3 voice-activated infotainment system in conjunction with an 8-inch colour touchscreen which can be controlled by pinch and swipe gestures. FordPass Connect which features in the new Ford Transit van, allows van fleet owners to improve van utilisation and optimise running costs and is standard on all models in the Ford Transit Custom range.
The Ford Transit Custom will also be available with a host of driver assistance technologies including: Intelligent Adaptive cruise Control, Active Park Assist, Lane Keeping Aid and Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Tow.
