A more powerful diesel engine and mild-hybrid technology set for the Ford Tourneo Custom passenger carrying van based on the Ford Transit Custom. Vansdirect reveals all!
New Ford Tourneo Custom
The passenger carrying van based on the UK's best-seller the Ford Transit Custom is being updated for 2019, gaining 48-volt hybrid power, as well as a more powerful diesel engine. Ford vans have made the modifications in an attempt to take on competitors in the segment such as the Volkswagen Transporter based Caravelle and Mercedes-Benz Vito based V-Class.
New Ford Tourneo Custom EcoBlue Hybrid
The new van boasting hybrid technology is a first for the van-based people carrier market and adds a high-capacity 48-volt energy system to the existing 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine. The technology means that the stop start system engages in more situations as the electrical system powers the new van at low speeds.
The mild hybrid system engages when the Ford Tourneo Custom van is coasting, whilst the driver can also adjust the stop-start system of the van to activate at speeds up to 12mph. A factor which is also included, as is the case for all Tourneo Custom vans is an Eco mode which optimises the drive system delivering even better levels of efficiency.
The result is that the fuel economy for the EcoBlue hybrid model ranges between 32 and 40mpg, slightly better than a model not featuring the technology. Despite not sounding a massive amount, the couple of mpg savings can really add up on a Tourneo Custom van racking up the miles in stop-start city driving.
New Ford Tourneo Custom 185ps
If you require additional pulling power, Ford vans are also introducing a 185ps model of the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine. This new version is 15ps more powerful than the current 170ps model topping the range and is designed with the intention of hauling the larger 8 and 9 seater versions of the Ford Transit Custom based people carrier around. The new engine joins the range alongside 105ps and 130ps models.
Driver assist technologies
Also included in the van updates is a feature named FordPass Connect wifi, adding a hotspot which allows up to 10 devices to be connected, as well as a suite of new driver assist technologies. Blind spot detection with trailer tow assist features, which extends the area monitored behind the Tourneo Custom, adaptive cruise control with an intelligent speed limiter and traffic sign recognition also feature, as well as lane assist and active park assist. As was the case previously, the van will be available with a choice of standard and long body lengths and up to 9 seats on board.
Top spec Titanium X models will boast an impressive list of features including an 8-inch touchscreen, rear camera and xenon lights. The Tourneo Custom van will also be available in Sport trim level adding features including bi-tone alloy wheels, twin bonnet strips and a sports bodykit.
