UK new van market dips in July

UK new van market dips in July

The UK new van market saw a decrease in registrations last month of 5.9 percent in comparison with July 2017 following a similar decline of 5.8 percent in June 2018, Vansdirect reveals all!

New van registrations

The new van market declining 5.9 percent in July 2018 follows a slightly smaller decline of 5.8 percent in June. The biggest casualties last month were medium vans which experienced a massive decline of 28 percent, large vans and small vans also experienced declines last month, however on a much smaller scale of 3.8 percent and 2.8 percent respectively. It wasn't doom and gloom for the entire new van market, with sales of pick-ups increasing 13.9 percent following June where demand also increased 4.1 percent.

SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes focused on low business confidence as a potential factor behind the findings:

"While variations in buying cycles are a natural feature of the light commercials sector and demand is still at high levels, the overall trend is one of decline. Ongoing uncertainty and low business confidence are undoubtedly having an effect; therefore government must address these concerns and create the conditions necessary for the market to prosper."

July's best-selling new vans

Ford vans continued to lead the way with the best-selling new vans of last month, with the top two best-selling new vans remaining the same as June in the form of the new Ford Transit Custom and new Ford Transit van respectively. However it was a different story for the Ford Transit Connect which fell four places to seventh in the table last month, expect a reply in coming months from the Connect as the new model joins the market. The Ford Transit Connect was replaced in third place by the iconic Volkswagen Transporter van, which moved up three places in the table. Ford's fourth entry in the top ten came in the form of the Ford Ranger, which moved up two places to occupy sixth place in July.

Fourth and fifth placed new vans from June swapped places in July, with the Peugeot Partner snatching fourth place from the Vauxhall Vivaro van. It was a reversal of fortunes for Partner's sister van, the Citroen Berlingo, which fell one place to eighth in the table. The final two spots in the table were clinched by the Peugeot Boxer which occupied the same ninth spot as it did in June and a new entry in tenth place in the form of the Toyota Proace. The Mercedes Sprinter fell from the top ten last month, but expect a reply very soon from the Sprinter, as the new model finds its feet in the market.
