Road safety week 2019 is here, with this year’s these encouraging road users to step up for safe streets. All of this week Vansdirect will be sharing valuable content designed at raising awareness and making our roads and streets a safer place to be for everyone!

Road Safety Week 2019 – Vansdirect

Road Safety Week is the UK’s largest road safety event and is organised annually by road safety charity, Brake. The aim of Road Safety Week each year is to inspire schools, organisation and communities in their thousands to take action on road safety and promote the messages during the week and beyond, messages which can save lives. Someone is seriously injured or killed on a British road every 20 minutes and each one of these tragedies is preventable.

Road Safety Week in 2018 was aimed at making the roads a safer place for cyclists, an area where all motorists can help to make this possible is applying the ‘Dutch reach’ when opening vehicle doors from the inside, this forces occupants to check the blind spot area over their shoulder before swinging open their vehicle door.

Road Safety Week 2019 (18th-24th November) is encouraging people to ‘Step up for Safe Streets’ and learn about the solutions that will allow us all to get around in safe ways on a daily basis.

Safe Journeys

These happen when our road transport network is designed so that human error behind the wheel doesn’t result in serious injury or death. This approach of road safety by design is known as safe systems and these are known and available to us now. From enhanced safety technology in new vans and cars, to speed limits which reflect the safety of the roads. Brake believe we can all step up to learn about, shout about and celebrate these proven solutions.

Healthy Journeys

Healthy journeys are an important part of keeping us healthy, happy and fit. We need to ensure that opting to cycle or walk doesn’t put our health at an increased risk and that the air we breathe on our travels is clean air/ In terms of solutions in this area, Brake has encourages policy makers to step up and make safe spaces for travel by bike and on foot and ensure that the vans and cars which remain on our roads make use of ultra-low emission technology and hence have a less detrimental impact on the air that we breathe.

Stepping up

This is the centre of Road Safety Week 2019, stepping up. So who does Brake think can step up? And how?

  • Individuals can step up by making a pledge to use roads safely, minimise vehicle use and shout out loud and proud for safe system solutions
  • Schools can help young people step up by learning how to create a safe and healthy future and shouting out for change
  • Organisations can step up their policies and procedures to ensure safe systems solutions are chosen
  • Emergency Service Professionals can step up to highlight their crucial role in helping keep everyone safe
  • Policy makers are able to step up by developing and mandating safe systems solutions

Every serious injury or death on our roads is a tragedy with each one also being preventable. Step up for Safe Streets with Brake and Vansdirect and do your bit for a safe and healthy future on the roads.
