New Mercedes X-Class reviewed!

New Mercedes X-Class reviewed!

The entry of Mercedes vans into the pickup truck market has been hotly anticipated, with the brand claiming that the Mercedes X-Class is the 'first premium pickup,' Vansdirect investigates these claims!

Mercedes vans now offer pickups

The first pickups for sale from Mercedes vans aren't a completely new creation, the most eagle eyed of you will realise similarities with a certain Nissan Navara pickup truck, that's no coincidence as the X-Class is based on the Nissan van and has been targeted right at the top-end of the new pickup truck market at 'lifestyle' customers.

Mercedes vans

Mercedes vans have boasted that the X-Class is not simply a rebadged Nissan Navara and that they have taken a number of actions to improve the suspension and chassis in attempts to improve refinement and handling over other pickups for sale. The pickup uses the same robust ladder frame chassis from the Nissan Navara.

Engines

The Mercedes X-Class is powered by a selection of two four-cylinder Euro 6 compliant diesel engines the X220d and the X250d, with 160ps and 190ps outputs. These two engines are the same that are on offer in the Nissan Navara. However Mercedes vans have confirmed that a 3.0-litre Euro 6 compliant V6 diesel engine will join the line-up later in the year and will differentiate the X-Class further from its rivals as well as adding a huge amount of extra power. Fuel economy of the two Navara equivalent engines are lesser than their counterparts with 37.2mpg from the X220d in comparison with 44.8mpg on the Navara and 35.8mpg on the X250d in comparison with 40.4mpg on the Navara. Fuel economy slightly suffers on the X-Class due to the additional weight added by the extra length, wider track and chassis strengthening

Models

The X-Class is only available in double cab form, unlike the Nissan Navara where king cab models are also available. The new pick-up van does however have three highly impressive and luxurious trim levels: Pure, Progressive and Power. Even base level 'Pure' models are highly equipped with standard features including: 17" steel wheels, a matt black grill, semi-automatic air conditioning and an infotainment system with DAB, Bluetooth and a 7" display screen controlled with a rotary dial. Progressive and Power models add a number of features to add to the luxury feel of the pick-up.

Loadspace

The pickup which the Mercedes X-Class is based upon (the Nissan Navara) offers one of the largest load beds on the market, the X-Class is even larger. The X-Class is 38mm wider and 40mm longer than the Nissan van, equating to a load area that is 1,587mm long and 1,569mm wide. Add these figures to a payload of 1087kg on X220d models and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, you realise just how capable the Mercedes van is at carrying challenging loads.
