London ULEZ will expand in 2021

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has confirmed that the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London will be expanded from the 25th October 2021.

There is an upcoming central London ULEZ which will go live in April 2019, this latest confirmation from the London major is an expansion of this zone to reach the North and South circular roads. Vans and cars that are not compliant with emission standards will be charged £12.50 to enter the ULEZ, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, unlike the London Congestion Charge which only applies during peak hours.

 

What emissions standards will make me exempt from the charge?

Somewhat controversial depending on who you ask, the ULEZ is predominantly arduous for drivers of diesel vans, only vans (and cars) that meet Euro 6 diesel emission standard will be exempt from the charge whereas the regulations appear more lenient for petrol vans and cars, only those that don't meet Euro 4 emissions standards will be required to pay the charge.

 

How many vehicles are expected to be effected?

Increasing the size of the central London ULEZ in 2021 will see the zone increasing by 18 times in size. The office of the London Mayor has estimated that the expanding of the ULEZ will affect approximately 35,000 vans, 100,000 cars and 3,000 Lorries on a daily basis.

 

ULEZ replacing London T-Charge

The ULEZ areas will replace the current London Toxicity-Charge (T-Charge) which was introduced in October 2017. Currently owners of pre Euro 4 petrol and diesel vehicles are required to pay a £10 supplement in addition to the £11.50 London Congestion Charge when then drive in the area.

The London Major Sadiq Khan has labelled the air pollution in London as 'Shameful' and a 'national health crisis' and believes hard-hitting measures are the way to tackle the issue: "I promised hard-hitting measures to tackle our shameful air pollution. We're doing everything in our power to tackle this issue and are starting to see improvements in air quality with the wide-ranging action we've taken already on tackling the most polluting vehicles."
