The first of the Vansdirect trio of sponsored PDC Darts begins his quest to lift the PDC World Darts Championship this Thursday, Vansdirect previews Gerwyn Price’s second round match against William O’Connor in the PDC World Darts Championship 2020!
Vansdirect sponsored Gerwyn Price comes into the 2020 World Championship as second favourite after the best darting year of his career, which has seen him rise to third in the world rankings thanks to a string of fantastic performances. These include retaining his Grand Slam of Darts title which included a staggering 16-6 win in the final against Peter Wright, with Price becoming only the seventh darts player in history to retain a PDC major with that victory in Wolverhampton.
Price also reached the final in the European Championship and Players Championship Finals in 2019 and will be keen to get through his second round tie without any scares, with a number of high seeded casualties in the first few days of action including Michael Smith and Rob Cross.
In William O’Connor, Price faces an opponent who will be full of confidence after hammering Marko Kantele 3-0 in his first round tie, however he will significantly need to improve on his three dart average of 88 for his second round match to cause Price any problems whatsoever, he’ll also need to improve on his doubling after missing 9 in the first set of the match.
Price is heavily fancied to progress to the third round, however he certainly won’t be taking anything for granted, having never previously progressed past the last 16 stage at Ally Pally and he will be aware of the potential threat that World Cup of Darts finalist, O’Connor could cause, having hit six 180’s in his first round clash.
Price is not looking past this first contest and believes the first tie is always the most difficult to win:
“I just want to get through my first game in and then anything can happen, the first round is always the hardest but I’ll give it a good shot.”
Expect a tough opening clash for Price, with the Welshman overcoming the test to cement his place in the third round. O’Connor is certainly dangerous enough to take a set off the Iceman, but overall we expect him to score too consistently and heavily for the Irishman to really threaten the upset.
