Ford vans have confirmed that an all-electric version of the full-size Ford Transit van is currently under development and will enter production in 2021 as part of an electrification push from the manufacturer which will see all of their vehicles experience some form of electrification in the form of either mild-hybrid, PHEV or battery electric versions.

Specifications for the Ford Transit van electric have not yet been outlined and so far Ford vans have only publicly stated their intent to electrify the iconic Transit van, however they say that the new Transit van electric will be available in multiple body styles once volume production starts in 2021. As a result of this, expect a selection of wheelbase lengths, roof heights and door types for a wide range of applications and requirements.
Ford vans have also yet to issue any details regarding the powertrain or estimated all-electric range of the electric Transit van, however we aren't expecting a particularly huge figure in mind from Ford vans, given that the brand has the urban, last-mile delivery environment in mind for the new electric van. As such, Ford vans have promised "a practical daily driving range for city-based businesses"as well as a competitive payload figure.
The Ford Transit electric van will be a rival for the Mercedes Sprinter electric vanwhen it joins the market two years from now. The electric Mercedes Sprinter van features a battery which is 55kWh in size in the top spec model, enabling a claimed real-world range by Mercedes vans of 93 miles on a single charge.
Alongside the announcement of the new all-electric Transit van, Ford vans have also revealed a new plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Tourneo Custom minibus which will join the market later this year capable of 31 miles of pure electric driving.
