UK new van market dips in September with pick-ups bucking the trend
The UK new van market declined 6.1 percent in September 2018 in comparison with September 2017, however a number of buyers still tucked into new 68-plate vans.
September new van registrations
The UK new van decreasing 6.1 percent in September 2018 follows a contrasting month in August where demand increased 5 percent. The only beneficiaries last month were new pick-ups which enjoyed an 8.8 percent increase in demand from last year. Large van sales remained relatively stable in September, falling 4 percent in new van sales from September 2017, Medium van sales experienced a larger decrease of 14.4 percent last month whilst small van sales were the largest casualties last month falling 42.9 percent.
SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes believes there is some hesitancy in the UK new van market commenting:
"We have seen fluctuations in UK van registrations so far this year, but the overall downward trend shows that there is some hesitancy in the market. Businesses need certainty to invest and future growth now depends on government providing the right economic conditions to encourage operators to renew their fleets."
September's best-selling new vans
Ford vans again led the way in the second busiest month of the UK new van market, with new 68-plate vans becoming available. The Ford Transit Custom sold more than double any other new van for sale in September, with the Ford Transit van moving up one place in the best-sellers table to be the second best-selling new van for sale in September. The biggest gainer in September was the Vauxhall Vivaro van, moving six places up the table to take third place in the table, whilst the Volkswagen Transporter took up the same fourth place as it did in August 2018.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter fell three places to fifth in the table last month whilst the Ford Ranger fell one place to sixth and the Peugeot Partner fell three places to ninth. It was similar news for another of the Peugeot vans for sale in September, with the Peugeot Boxer falling from seventh place in August out of the top ten completely last month. Whilst the Citroen Berlingo also fell from the top ten, with buyers potentially waiting for the new model to join the market.
On the flip side, the Ford Transit Connect moved up one place last month to seventh in the table, whilst there were two new top ten entries in the form of the Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara in eighth and tenth places in the table respectively, outlining an impressive month for new pick-ups.
