Japanese car and van manufacturer Nissan has announced that it will cut 1,200 jobs from its Sunderland factory in response to the current economic crisis and its impact on the car industry. This will be the first Nissan has undertaken such cost cutting measures since production began at the Sunderland factory in 1986.
Nissan, who makes cheap vans and cheap cars including the Primastar and Micra joins the list of other manufacturers in trouble. Indeed, Vauxhall (the UK subsidiary of General Motors) and Jaguar Land Rover are already on politicians' minds with 4,400 jobs at risk according to the Times newspaper. As per the US, the UK car industry is calling on the Government for financial aid.
According to the Times, Nissan officials have said that it hopes to avoid compulsory redundancies, but admits that 800 permanent and 400 temporary jobs are at risk. Similarly, Honda will begin a two-month shutdown at its Swindon based factories in response to the economic climate.
