German car giant, BMW, is planning to build two new models of the Mini in Britain. According to BMW and Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, the two new models would be built at the Cowley plant near Oxford. The two new models of the Mini will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show on September 15 - and is likely to include an innovative two seat convertible.
Norbert Reithofer, BMW’s Chief Executive, said that the new Mini car will create new jobs and investment at the Cowley plant - a much needed boost to the ailing UK car and van industry. Demand for the Mini has increased of late with the growing popularity across the world for smaller cars. So marked is the increase in demand that BMW have rehired many of the 850 workers previously made redundant.
It has also been suggested that UK government's scrappage scheme had some part to play in the revival of BMW fortunes with the Mini car.
