Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has opted to use the Ford Transit for their Emergency Response & Repair Crews. NGN have ordered 134 MWB high roof Transits all powered by Ford's 2.4-litre 140hp engines. Each vehicle will carry under-floor generators and compressors together with being fitted with load area racking and workbenches. Ford has also fitted the Transits with heavy-duty batteries, Thatcham approved alarms, speed limiters and vinyl-trimmed seats.
NGN distributes gas to approximately 2.5m homes and businesses across Yorkshire, the North East and northern Cumbria through a pipe network of almost 23,000 miles. As such the Ford Transits are expected to rack up 20,000 miles per annum each with the expectation of a 4 year / 80,000 mile lifespan.
Ford also manufactures the Ford Fiesta Van and the Ford Transit Connect.
